Can you really land a descent job like a video game artist straight from high school in Japan?

In my country, high school grad is worthless. Even a university/college grad can't even find a good paying job unless your a lucky (or talented) one.

I don't know if you can, but i'm pretty sure if you could that they'd atleast want you to have a huge amount of experience in whatever you're applying for. Unless they're in downtime and are willing to train someone from the bottom up

Ordinary , computer game industry employees are graduated from technical college that teaches basic creative skills for the job, in Japan. Anime industry also.
Aoba's path seems fictionized, a bit.

Na it's more about the fact that japan is a developed country. They don't need uni graduation for everything.

On developing third world countries, uni graduation is everything as you'll need it even if you want to support your house with a low salary low intelligence demanding job, something which a lot of japanese teenagers jump in right after high school. Also I'm guessing that in where you live there are a lot of universities, and most of them are actually easy to enter/graduate, so in the end the education systems are the thing that's different.

Though I don't think being employed as a video game producer/artist after high school is possible anywhere lol you have to have a lot of connections.

It's almost impossible to get in a tech field in the US without at least an Associate's Degree at the very least outside of an internship, so I doubt it's even possible in Japan either. However it's possible for a 19 year old to get in if they graduated high school early and got a degree at 19 or younger.

Maybe in later episodes we'll learn of some kind of connection Aoba has that got her this position right out of high school.

I mean in the US you can if you are extremely talented in art. Most art software is pretty easy to operate so I believe this is possible only because she is part of the art team.

Its possible to get a job straight out of Highschool, when I finished Highschool in Japan, I went straight for a full time job on a Engineering field but my job doesn't contain that much complex work as I don't have that much knowledge on Robotic and mechanical fields back then but after working for like 2 years with the company, I left and went to University so I can expand my fields more later on.

But on my part, I have connections hence I got that job.

It happens.
1. High school graduates are cheaper than university graduates.
2. While the management section cares about your educational background, the developer section care nothing other than your artistic taste and personality.
3. Job skill doesn't matter when it comes to new graduates. We want a white canvas to brainwash from square one. There is lesser mobility in workers environment than in western countries like United States. They train you while paying you because they expect eventually your potential will repay them in 40 years term.

I myself knew nothing when I join my company as sound designer.

It should be more common, you go to school to then get a job.
What's the point of needing years of exp for an entry level job? schools are useless then.

Depends on how skilled / talented you are when you come out of High School. No matter what country, depending on the Job, school credentials is a second priority, not a first. :D

I did 3D modeling for 2 years of my high school, barely passed HS because of it.

but i was the first guy in my batch to get a decent paying Job in a local studio where they make products & interior / exterior designs into 3D.
