Recommendations SHOULD:
be written in English.
have good grammar: use spellcheck, full sentences, punctuation and proper capitalization.
contain persuasive arguments based on opinion and not solely on fact. "Both are very good" is not persuasive.
try to avoid always starting with the word "both".

Recommendations should NOT:
be based solely on information already available on the anime/manga page. This includes:
genres
producers/directors/mangaka/magazine/VAs
score/popularity (as these are subject to change)
relations
include a series which is not released.
address your reader or any other viewers of the series, in either a positive or negative fashion. This includes commenting on specific groups of MyAnimeList users.
be written for the purpose of insulting other entries and/or their viewership.
plagiarize anyone else's work.
comment on any other recommendations.

Reviews MUST:
be written in English.
have good grammar: use spellcheck, full sentences, punctuation and proper capitalization.
include why you liked/disliked the work. Furthermore, these statements should be supported and done so in a way that does not spoil the series for the reader.
be written in their entirety and final form when posting; they are not meant to be updated as you make your way through the work.
be presented as fairly and objectively as possible (see above for a further explanation).

Reviews must NOT:
plagiarize anyone else's work.
contain any plot specifics (spoilers) which may harm the reader's enjoyment of the work by describing events which eliminate surprise, suspense or dramatic tension. As a rule of thumb, refrain from including information which you would not add to a synopsis. If a spoiler is deemed required to give a conclusive review of the series, the writer must include a "THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS" label at the top of the review, provided that the spoiler is hidden below the "Read More" link. However, this is neither a free pass to spoil the entire series nor give a play-by-play of every event.
comment on any other reviews.
comment on or discuss any content on the entry page. This includes the score and popularity of the series, as these are subject to change.
address your reader or any other viewers of the series, in either a positive or negative fashion. This includes commenting on specific groups of MyAnimeList users.
be an ineligible preview of the series. Please see below for more information.
focus solely on comparing any adaptation or source material of the entry. A few sentences for general information is alright, but remember that your review is a critique of the work itself, not a comparison. Your readers may not be interested in reading the novel nor care if the plot deviates from it.
be a commentary on what you've watched/read of the entry. If you'd like to give your opinion on the premise of the series, the plot of the first few episodes, recent developments in the story, or the wonderful/terrible ending, please use the episode discussion topics in the entry's sub-forum.
contain messages to moderators. Please use the Anime or Manga support boards for any concerns related to an entry.

So, dear administration, is it should, or must?

Doesn't matter; if they're guidlines, then nothing is imperative, and it's obvious that pretty much none of it is being enforced.
Be thankful for the wisdom granted to you.

> implying people read guidelines

change from should to must, nothing substantial is going to change anyway.
I don't know why people write that they are approachable persons,
if you were you wouldn't be on MAL.

Extended families or lovers on MAL are a farce.

Yeah, "must" and "should" are similar: we use them to talk about duty, obligation, advice, or instructions, but must has a much stronger degree of emphasis. Must implies that it is important to follow these instructions and if you don’t do that, your review/recommendation will be deleted. There is no choice. Should, however, means that it is recommended to do something, but whether other users do as you say, or not, is their choice. It’s should.

So, according to our recommendation guidelines, I can write my recommendations in Chinese, German, or whatever language I want. Funny thing is that it is not allowed on this website. You are free, however, to write recommendations in any language you want, but you will have to include English, as well.

I really like something forums called Batoto use when explaining it all so it is understood by the majority: 'Use common sense'.

It's because of this sort of complaints that long texts are a drag. People will always find a hole to complain. Not like I'm the one to comment though, as I like to do that often. But yeah. It's simple. It means that you do it if it is only should/must, or not if it says 'not' alongside should/must.

It is an open secret that they both are similar, they are very similar; however, should, in both guidelines, will sound much better.

Anyways, allow me to explain one thing, staff members can’t be wrong. You can’t just “nah, I will use should here”, or “nah, I will use must here.” Review/recommendation guidelines are important and I hope that there is no need for me to explain it to you.

By the way, my first message in this thread shows that there are users that don’t understand it and there will be more. I don’t care if it will be edited, though; it’s not for me to decide.

@Samael; Anyone can be wrong, it's only human. This is an entertainment-focused website. Generating stress over such minor matters that are understood anyway is a bit off.

But then again, if one goes into length, he takes it upon himself. You're not wrong and I'm sure the staff would prefer there to be absolutely no doubt if possible, but come on, for something this minor, I think we both know using the PM feature would end up as more effective. There really is no meaning to this thread being open in public, as any response by the staff would be baiting material.

@Subpyro

I am trying to increase my post count here, okay? And since Luna is the only staff member that might actually reply, I will surely get ~2-5 more messages.

Yes, you are right. But I am not going to explain it to you, since you are also a mod on “one entertainment-focused site.” Being wrong is totally okay; however, not working on your mistakes, isn’t.
