Soul gems are solid form of girl's soul who have made contract with Kyubey and become magical girls. Negative emotions and use of magic "taints" the soul gem. If soul gem is completely tainted and black it becomes grief seed and magical girl turns into a witch. Soul gems can be purified with grief seeds.
First I'd like to give you my theory: Magical girl's negative emotions turn solid (witch) becase their soul is also solid. Normal people's emotions don't take solid form because their souls aren't solid.
What do you think about it? But I also have some questions. Why are only negative emotions "shown" in soul gem? And why can you only purify them with grief seeds. If soul gem shows negative emotions it should also show positive ones. And positive ones should be able to purify negative emotions. Let's say girl is about to become witch. Her soul gem is black. But then her crush comes and says he loves her. This should cause so much happiness that soul gem isn't black anymore. I don't understand it. Also can magical girl choose her soul gems color, place when transformed, shape, weapons and magical outfit? What do you think about all that, do you have any questions and theories? Sorry for long comment and my horrible English.
