I'm genuinely confused by the changes in animation in Legend of the Galactic Heroes. In a single episode the animation will change from what looks to be late eighties-early nineties animation to a much newer looking style. I haven't found anything that seems to acknowledge this. Please tell me whether I'm just watching an inauthentic version, or this is what the original release was like. Thanks.

I presume you are watching the DVD remastered version. I can assure you the animation shifts were not part of the original release, but rather a result of the animators' inconsistent attempts to improve the animation. That being said, the differences between the original release and the remastered version are almost purely cosmetic and have no impact on the plot at all, although there are cases where the differences are noticeable enough to alter the viewing experience. Compare, for example, the following two scenes from episode 38 (the above being the original, and the below remastered):

EDIT: The linked videos contain some minor spoilers to the plot, so any viewers who have not reached that episode and do not wish to be spoiled are advised to not watch those videos.

That's a high quality remaster I must say.

Then that is fine I guess. I just thought it would be polite to give a heads up to those who are currently in the midst of watching =)

I have recently been encountering the same 'issue' in my watching experience on Youtube. The switch between animation styles sometimes becomes so severely obvious that it is highly bothersome. It appears to occur most frequently in the episodes numbered in the late 30's. I had rather watch the original animation because quite frankly it looks far better, but I do not assume this can be found easily.

I am watching latest Bluray version, there are no obvious switches in animation.
In fact I did not see any switches.
