So I am watching Nana again but I have never ever watched episodes two through five where they do the background story. To this day it still doesn't interest me.

But watching episodes six to thirteen I just can't help but feel like Nana and Shoji's relationship is awkward and lacks chemistry. Every time they talk it ends with Nana apparently saying something so bad that she ends up having to apologize and they don't exactly make up. It's painful to watch and not in an emotionally good way.

I can see how Nana was immature at times in the relationship but he was just as immature like when she first gets to Tokyo and cleans his apartment and he is ungrateful and then she says "is that all they thanks I get? Thanks a lot Shoji."

Or something like that and apparently that was so bad of her to say that they have nothing else to say after that. He could have been mature about it and said "I'm sorry but you know I can't support us both right now so please try to get out and look for a job tomorrow."

Ugh! I'm glad they are not together anymore. I didn't really understand why he was so heart broken over it because I never felt the intense chemistry and love between them. They both acted like they had to be together just because they made some promise to each other. Like how Shoji kept saying he was going to the grave with Nana and really wanted to marry her. Like he was trying to convince himself to stay committed to that goal or something.

Was their relationship awkward to anyone else?

Yes, I found their relationship awkward too. It is probably because when Hachi first meets Shoji, she 'falls in love at first sight'. It was a really bad habit of hers to crush on strangers so Jun-chan convinced her that she and Shoji should just be friends. Hachi tried really hard and she stopped seeing him as a man and saw him as a friend she could rely on (then they started dating even though she had second thoughts). I believe it was a one-sided relationship for a while, where Shoji looked at her romantically and she still thought he was a good friend. She had to force herself to see him romantically. Hachi and Shoji were in a weird relationship from start to finish..
