Is 2nd Shift like "Super Saiyan?"

I just noticed throughout the entire second season until he "Revives" in the middle of the finale Byakushiki's 2nd shift isn't shown at all. I thought he unlocked it during the whole Gospel incident, so what is the deal? Is 2nd shift like a temporary thing or what? And if so how the hell did he keep it's blaster that wasn't in the 1st shift to begin with?
