Animewolfguy said: A clip of what I think will be the opener. Can't wait Well, this is definitely interesting. Funny, too. I don't suppose we'll be getting anything resembling an explanation for the freaking crystal tree palace that would actually make a semblance of sense, but we all know better than to expect that at this point. The episode itself looks rather promising. I do so look forward to the arguments as to why the unrestricted rule of immortal superpowered monarchs is largely preferable to the terrible curse of equilitarianism. |

I'm pretty sure the tree thing will be address knowing how many people are bitching about it threw out the fandom but the fans are never happy anyway. I think this is another shot for that PPG episode that I heard was recieve negitive by fans. |

Animewolfguy said: the tree thing will be address knowing how many people are bitching about it "Addressing" things is so pointless without actual, sensible explanations anyway. It only eats up screen time. They really should stop with this sort of "addressing"... or at least McCarthy should, her track record of explanations that make sense is disastrous. |

Well that is what happens when people start shooting death threats at her for explaining things then go and gets angry about it. |

Finally we found the bastards truly responsible for bad writing in the show: disgruntled fans. Surely we cannot expect professional writers to do their job properly when there are people complaining - the horror! - on the Internet. |

Interesting. Larson, Rogers, Morrow are back, which isn't news, but it's nice to have that effectively confirmed. Williams and Powell are apparently out for this season, and I for one ain't going to miss those two the slightest bit. Whether the rest of them is actually good (some likely are) and if all the names are guessed correctly in the first place, remains to be seen. For now, it actually looks better than the fourth season. There's a lot of potential, unless the good ones end up being horribly underused and the majority of the new guys wreak havoc upon this long-suffering series etc. etc. We'll see in... what, half a year? mmkay. |

Also I'm kinda sad Merri isn't comming back. I think like poslkey, she takes risk a lot more and puts the most effort depite its reaction it got. |

As it happens, I got a bit tied up for a while, and then decided to wait so I could watch a few episodes in a row. Given the announced writers, I didn't really expect much from the last two episodes. But at least the pilot should be interesting, right? The Cutie Map: And indeed it is. We knew it was coming, yet few were truly prepared. I don't think there's much doubt that this is by far the weirdest episode in the series, two-parter or otherwise. It's sort of hard to judge it by usual standards, as metanarrative bits and pieces keep getting in the way. The Cutie Map does look like one of those reactionary episodes that try to address some piece of criticism towards the show in general. At its core there's a typical McCarthy's little speech on the nature of this series dressed in a story that looks like it's trying its hardest not to appear too political. Without getting too deep into the matter, the greatest weakness of this episode in my opinion is that it's trying to be too many very different things at once, and its greatest strength is that it doesn't fall apart under its own weight - an achievement I'm inclined to credit to M.A. Larson. As an adventure story first and foremost, it's for the most part good. A few inconsistencies and plot hiccups don't seem to affect the story in any major way. There's some exceptionally good characterisation, most importantly Fluttershy and... what's his name... Party Favor, I believe. When it comes to larger continuity questions though, it's traditionally terrible. None of the castle bullshit still makes any sense, and really, it never will. And then there's cutie marks. Apparently, AJ's special talent includes speaking in Southern. What. Seriously, what. I don't even. Total score: The Horsehead Nebula out of ten. I still have very little idea of what to make of this episode, but I'm having a slew of rather unwelcome deja vu's from various Communist Equestria fanfics from late 2010. "Comrade Sparkle failed to raise the Sun. The air is turning into ice." Thanks, McCarthy! Castle Sweet Castle: Oh dear Celestia, why. Whoever thought that exhuming that tree trunk and hanging it roots down in that godawful castle interior is going to improve it is a complete bloody moron, holy crap. And you'd think it's so obvious. Yes, Fluttershy, keep going about all those books Twi loves so much, surely it's easy to see how bringing in a few bookcases and bookshelves and reading spots and tea tables and things of that nature would be just perfect. That's what you guys are going to do, right? Wait, where are you going? Why the shovels? Wait, what? What??? What are doing. What... What's wrong with you ponies. Stop. No. For the love of Celestia, please stop... please, no... . . . There's no Celestia, only cold, uncaring Universe. Three episodes in, and we already have a runner-up for the worst episode in the entire series. This is bloody brilliant. Well, there's one more left for now, maybe that one will be alright. Oh wait, it's a CMC episode. Please shoot me. Bloom & Gloom: Or rather don't, this one's actually not bad. I've certain, very limited yet firm appreciation for Haber's style. He's not Shakespeare - or even Polsky for that matter - but his basic writing expertise is unquestionable. Tightly written and very well paced, his episodes don't seem to require much depth or characterisation to be perfectly entertaining. All and all it could be worse I guess. And now, the next few episodes with their intriguing premises and great writers actually seem to be worth looking forward to. Morrow's Rainbow Dash, Levinger's Discord, more griffins? Why yes, all of the above please. |

I only watched it a couple of days ago, and in hindsight it's growing on me. None of the problems with it seem to be directly related to its core Wacky Adventure On The Edge Of Equestria story and how it unfolds. It retains this McCarthyan quality of being a great, fun show as long as you don't think about it, but to a significantly lesser degree. The other two are pretty meh, yeah. |

Also apparently there'll be four episodes by her this season, according to her twitter. Disney was putting out some very interesting series lately... if mostly on XD. If it means she's now more likely to work on some McCracken, Rudish or Renzetti projects, I'm perfectly happy with that. |

Slice Of Life: this couldn't end well... and it didn't. A couple of passable jokes hardy make up for having to sit through 20 minutes of throwbacks, in-jokes, and literally nothing else. Princess Spike: thoroughly mediocre. Twi talking in half-sleep was amusing; the Rube Goldberg machine nature of the accident and its sheer extent seem way too far-fetched. As for Spike's characterisation, this episode simply repeats the standard theme of Spike slowly succumbing to temptation. It starts from a good place though, so it be worse. The basic premise just isn't very exciting, and the combined writing power of Thiessen, Miller and yet another new guy wasn't enough to shape it into something better. Party Pooped: finally, a good one. Not necessarily among the best, but a solid episode nonetheless, well paced and with a lot of great little ideas. I found the Pinkie quest very amusing, with great conclusion and - at last, after all these years! - a proper The Beatles reference. The Pinkie Cave scenes were similarly good and well-executed. The story ended rather satisfactory with an apt, timely moral about the mistake of trying to pander in the first place. It's hard to say how much of this episode is primarily Thiessen and Miller's achievement, but there must be some things by Confalone himself here - pacing and some of the jokes, at the very least. Apparently there's going to be another episode by this new writer, and I'm looking forward to it. Amending Fences: more of a disappointment. Otherwise competent, this episode is dragged down by bringing the logic of a slice-of-life episode into a situation from an ancient-evil-awakening type of episode. Yes, Twilight, it's such a terrible, terrible thing that you were focused so much on saving the entire world from a cosmic scale catastrophe. The seams of this show's core design are showing here, and they're better left alone. Like with Griffonstone, it's hard to say whether this series misses the points from the first season because the original direction doesn't suit it anymore, or because they simply don't care to remember those in the first place. |

That and the traviling moment that Pinkie had was so pointless. But however its not so bad but its so forgettable. Also for Princess spike, I can say its is part of the episodes I despise. Now its up to ten from the whole show but out of the 4 episodes I hate from this entire season, this I can call for my number one worst of the entire season which is going well so far. I rather perfer slice life then this episode and i didn't like that one ether. |

But however its not so bad but its so forgettable. Curious. This is almost the polar opposite of my own experience with this episode, haha. I rewatched PP a couple of times, and it's certainly far from forgettable in my opinion. I find the Pinkie quest highly entertaining, it ties very well with the story's conclusion, and the story itself makes perfect sense to me. It's a Twilight/Pinkie episode, and a much better one than most of them (both MMMystery and FPK belong here, so no big surprise). The main issue is Twilight getting invested in a failed plan, and too preoccupied with her fear of disappointing Celestia to properly deal with the problem, at which point it takes Pinkie to break away from her friends (who have gotten perhaps a bit too accustomed to simply relying on Twi's judgement) and discover the solution on her own. I'm extremely pleased with characterisations in this episode. Twilight being afraid of disappointing Celestia is done infinitely better than in Lesson Zero, and it works well at keeping the main narrative together. Meanwhile, this version of Pinkie is fantastic, she's being a perfectly good and reasonable character without losing much of her cartoonish Pinkieness, and in the years passed since this series' beginning I've never, ever seen this happening outside of Morrow's episodes. Based on characterisations of main characters alone, this must be one of the best episodes in the entire series. I'd still agree it's not, though. A number of issues prevent it from becoming a truly great one. Most notably - and I think most people would agree with me here - yaks' autistic rage fits are way too overdone, and completely overshadow the core issue of trust. The basic premise of Princess of Friendship suddenly expected to handle foreign affairs of the state could use a fair amount of polish as well. These, and a few smaller issues most likely come from the new writer, but I also feel he might be responsible for some of the good in this episode as well. I guess we'll have to wait for his next episode (there's at least one planned) to judge better. |
