Hunter x Hunter... Gon... Strong from the start...

LOL!

Gon literally spent the first 30 episodes being one of the weakest beings in the world. His only good quality was his willpower... His first 4 fights were him getting knocked out by some of the weakest guys in the show, then his 5th (first win) was basically a competition where you had to make the opponent surrender. He was beaten, tortured and all that, but he didn't surrender, so opponent just gave up.

Kuroko no Basket - strong but in a different way
Shokugeki no Soma - doesn't exactly try to appear weak, but instead appears overconfident and is deemed by all to just have a big ego etc. when he truly does have amazing skills and consistently surprises everyone with them
Gakusen Toshi Asterisk - no strong element of surprise but he does impress everyone and regularly beat those who were sure they'd win
Rakudai kishi no Cavalry - pretty much the same as Gakusen Toshi Asterisk, you'll enjoy it if you liked Mahouka no Rettousei
Sakamoto desu ga (sort of) - always surprises everyone with his cool way of handling things and dodges all attempts made by jealous classmates to hurt him

I guess the definition of 'strong' varies in each one, but they're all very enjoyable anime, and it's just fun to see the main character outsmart his opponents every time.

Ok so I've watched a few animes like this and love them so sorry in advance if its too specific. Im looking for an anime where the main character is crazy strong and has a group with him who are close to unbeatable to others but he is above all. Im not looking for a virtual reality type, sports or martial arts, something mystical. Ohh, and a perk of this would be them trying to take over the world or something along the lines. Ive seen Seven deadly sins, dont really try to take over but yh and Overlord which was amazing(recommend!!!!). Thanks for your help in advance.

This is literally my fav anime of all time, it's a little long (understatement), and the first 4 episodes are crap, buuuuuuuut after that, It gets friggin amazing.

They all know how to control their powers and everything, and the characters tend to try to not use powers unless absolutely necessary.

Well its an old thread and many have already suggested what i would have.So rather than animes ill suggest some manhwas which i think fit this category
Ruler of the land-The main character is goofy and lovale,and never fights.Any1 who challenges him he simply runs away.But oh boy if he wants he could destroy anyone.

Noblesse-The main character in this manhwa rarely talks,drinks ta mostly and just sits and relax.But he is so strong that he doesnt fight half the time he just looks at enemies and they give up.He is so op that he placed a seal on himself.Its is totally worth it

Nanatsu no taizai(people have already sugested this)-Ill just expand on the story,its about a small boy who owns a bar and is one of the seven deadly sins and he is op as fuck.

Tales of demons and gods-Well he is a weakling but he gets a second chance at life as he travels in past.He retains all his knowledge he collected b4 time travel and becomes very strong to protect his city and family from being destroyed again.

Kingdom-doesnt fill the bill exactly about a slave boy who wants to become a great general

The god of highschool-Another manhwa its about a teenage boy who is literally too op.Anything would be a spoiler but he is god himself.

This is a biiittt too late but anyways...

"Haikyuu" kinda fits your conditions. They don't really try to hide the fact that they are good. People treat them like they're weaklings because of their story and physical appearance (Especially Shoyo because of his height) but when Kageyama and Shoyo do the 'thing' people get really surprised.

PS. This is a sport anime - Volleyball to be exact.

Devil may cry: mc totaly bad ass and he knows how strong he is.

God eater: developing mc, but damm its worthit.
Trinity Blood: vampire anime, bad ass mc
Hellsing: i think it was mentioned, but in case it wasint here it goes, vampire, strongest mc an he knows it.
Zetman: old school art, probobly fits the criteria
Supernatural the animation: real life action tv serial made in anime, good if you like how 2 brothers hunt ghost, monsters, demons and etc.
Broken blade: developing mc, mecha but its good.
E's Otherwise: not exatly fit criteria but worth the time.
