By the way, can RahXephon really be considered mecha? To me, the 'mechs' in that anime look more like ancient, divine looking aliens to be honest. They certainly don't look like your traditional Gundan-type mech...

Code Geass R2
Suisei no Gargantia
The first Gundam anime forgot it's name (on its prime)
Gundam Seed (anything beyond seed is shit)
Full Metal Panic
Voltes V (on its prime)
Daimos (on its prime)
Kakumeiki Valvrave (if you remove the ending)
Eureka Seven
Neon Genesis Evangelion (don't have much memory on it anymore but I know it's really good)

Wait, you talkin' 'bout serious mecha or a lame-ass show with flashy OP robots?
If it's serious, go search anime like Votoms or Zeta Gundam; if it's not, take a look at the top-ranked trash like Code Geass or Gundam Wing/Seed.

Oh, and Gunbuster is the most epic and badass super-robot show ever. Plus boobs.

I'd say Code Geass, obviously. Lelouch was a pretty damn good character who was voiced by a pretty damn good Seiyuu. His plans were quite awesome, though I'd have to admit that his pride let him down at some points of R2. The story, while dropping in quality in R2, was still fine and R2 provided plenty of "cool" mech fights.

Hands down Big O. The characters are gripping and unique, the story unfolds over time creating an huge climax, and the artsytyle is just great.
