If someone exclusively reads books by checking them out for free from the library, does that mean they're not a real bookworm?

I don't know why pirates get so sensitive on this issue. When I pirated (and I still do occasionally, granted largely for older media) I never gave into an illusion that I wasn't anymore than a leech on the industry, rather than a contributing fan. I am not going to judge people for pirating itself. I am going to judge the self righteous ones, present in this community, and in others. That said the self righteous mentality of some anime fans, who are proud they don't contribute anything is almost embarrassing lol. I kinda get people like Takashi Hashimoto even if he is deflecting. |

| "The industry" doesn't care about you if you aren't from the GRORIOUS land of Nippon. Your shekels are seen as a pleasant surprise and nothing more. They divvy out their IPs to shit factories like Crunchyroll, Viz, and Funimation, and whatever floats, floats. They couldn't care less either way. How else are you going to show your support financially? By paying for streaming services? LOL If you wanna throw your money away so badly, find a way to give it to those who actively help you experience these works. Give it to the fansubbers and fanTLers (granted they don't use MTL or anything equally low-effort and lazy.) Give it to the guys uploading high-quality torrents of forgotten series. Give it to Bob, the 40-year-old giving away his figgy collection because he's going through a midlife crisis and can't stand looking at them now. I don't like half measures. Am I expected to buy "official" Blu-rays and burn the series they can't bother to give a modern release for? Is that even possible for manga without some absurdly expensive printer? When I was a teenager, I used to buy box sets of shows like SEL and FMA on DVD. Sometimes you'd have to spend hundreds of dollars just to get an entire series. Do I miss those days? FUCK no. Well, a little bit, but if you care about anything other than the surface-level stuff coming out now, then pirate. |

| @Gentropy Yeah, some anime blu-ray are hard to get all of the series. Especially for older shows, most of the ones I got though are relatively unpopular anime or got big discounts. My cheapest blu-ray was recently actually, with Sora no Method at about $12, so you can still find some decent prices, but then there's shows that get their blu-ray in 2-4 episode volumes which sometimes are priced high since then have often have extra stuff included. I know Sentai often has big sales though which is nice. |

| Most light novel translations into english are thoroughly wrong. Any time you purchase them you support the practice of besmirching the content. The more success these translations see the more influence accumulates over the original product. And because everything is light novel adaptations these days that would effect anime negatively. Applying that relationship to the many anime-related services overseas yes you can call yourself an anime fan without forking over money. The medium benefits by staying insular; having as little to do with you as possible. |
