The reason of SL's manhwa being loved is the quality of artwork
@Yasin1234567 It's a popcorn entertainment and it does its job so well.

I'm not seeing any hype like when chainsaw man aired or demon slayer, jjk. I thought this was supposed to be the most popular manhwa, So why is there this little much hype around it? Is it because of the studio or people are not interested in this anime anymore?

Are u sure about that man?

I think somone has to braek this to you guys but theres a big praboblity this will be a disaster... SL didnt have much in terms of fanservice and we all know that if Japan is adapting this there is bound to be some/alot. Second no one knows what was changed in the adaptation and they said that they will be changin/cuting some things(ant arc for ex.). Third visual are standard so compering them to well posished artowork of SL will leave a bad taste...

1- Solo Levelling isn’t remotely as popular in Japan

2- It’s also not remotely as popular in the west if you compare with shit like Chainsaw an JJK lmao

3- The production is very average to say the best, so there’s not much to be hyped about in the first place
@Isekai-Enjoyer Isn't loved by Japanese. Meanwhile was the top 5 most demanded comic to adapt by Japanese people.

And check this tweet out. Never seen a manhwa do numbers like this in japan

https://x.com/MangaMoguraRE/status/1738431380634443926?s=20
1) premier tickets in Tokyo were outsold in 2 days.

Also, didn't see a new anime ( except for few popular ones)get this treatment or advertising. They are advertising it all over tokyo. https://www.reddit.com/r/sololeveling/comments/17v0tkr/ikebukuro_is_so_pretty/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Its clearly not as popular as chainsaw man, but its clearly most anticipated debut aafter chainsaw man. "Isn't liked by Japanese " Is just some bs made up by manhwa fans just because it has some anti Japanese elements. But believe me when i say most of the Japanese will not even know about its korean version cuz all of them read its Japanese one (without the anti Japanese thing). Solo leveling in japan is perceived a lot differently like it is internationally. They call the MC Shun Mizushino-kun instead of the iconic Sung Jin Woo. They even had changes in the script so that japanese audience can read it thats how demanded it was. Japanese are more excited about the anime than the Foreigners lol

Solo Leveling literally got 2nd (2021) and 6th (2022) in AnimeJapan "Series We Want To Get Adapted Into Anime" polls.
@Infernalization animejapan isn't even from Japan. Believe me the novel and manga has its own fanbase, but it's not even right comparing to any popular manga from Japan. They are far more popular and it's a obvious fact.

"AnimeJapan is a Japanese anime consumer show held annually at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition center in Tokyo since in March 2014."

manwa just isn't as big yet as manga. it will be but it'll take time. also do realize that Koreans and Japanese don't exactly like each other all that much.

I mean a manwha being animated has to be a big deal because it has to be good in order to get an anime right?

i will be honest it doesnt even deserve the hype its currently getting, while solo leveling was like a predecessor and inspiration for many later works, within those there are much better manhwa out there, its similar to mushoku tensei in that sense many of the later works picked up the general idea and improved on it massively and solo leveling not having much of a plot to begin with doesnt help its case

Why DOES this have the hype it has? Genuine question, specifically directed towards the people who ARE hyped.

It's the most anticipated non-sequel show of the season by far, and I see that the manhwa was a big deal, too. But I didn't see anything in the trailers and the synopsis that really make this stand out.

What makes Solo Leveling special? From what I can tell, the best thing about it is the fights. Is that the one thing carrying the whole manhwa? Or are there other things to like, like interesting worldbuilding/power system, cool characters, intriguing mystery or an emotional story?

What are the anime that Solo Leveling is the closest to? Sword Art Online? Jujutsu Kaisen? God of High School?

@perseii

Unfortunately it has absolutely none of those things.

And in terms of anime it's closest to your run of the mill Isekai story with an OP MC, albeit one who's much more edgy and cold.

If you like power fantasy or revenge fantasy where the main character constantly encounters overconfident morons and destroys them, you'll like Solo Leveling. There isn't much else to enjoy, although I hear they're making some changes.

In my opinion, the show already has a decent amount of hype. I don't really know what Solo Leveling fans were expecting, but I see constant complaining that it's not getting "AOT level hype" or "CSM level hype" or any other popular series. Most popular series didn't really pop off until the anime came out, CSM is an exception and it's arguable that the hype didn't even do anything for it.

In my opinion, though, the anime will do well but won't become a phenomenon. Solo Leveling just doesn't has the mass appeal of these other popular series due to how shallow it is and how niche the edgy power fantasy genre is among general audiences. Doesn't help that the Manhwa is already the superior version to consume. Not just because of the great art, but also because of how fast paced it is and how fast you can read it on your own time.

I've seen people read all 200 chapters of the manhwa in one night. You simply can't do that with TV. And when you're unable to quick scroll through the shallowness and pointless dialogue all of the story's flaws will become way more annoying. Chapters and chapters of mindless dungeon grinding are not that interesting.

Cause it's another "But really he's the strrrrrrrongest" type of show, haven't we seen this exact formula enough? It's not like they are going to do anything at all to make it unique.

@gleamingcobra That description kind of confirms my suspicions.

I was just surprised because this one in particular looked like it was getting hyped way more than other similar shows. Maybe being the best in that group is enough to rocket it to the top of MAL's seasonal anime chart. Or maybe there just aren't any other "huge" shows in Winter 2024 that can take its place.

Csm was extremely hyped since its announcement but we all know how it went later on. Kny wasnt popular until the hype erupted after ep 19. Solo leveling is pretty popular and generated a significant amount of hype during its announcement and trailer release. I guess the marketing is a bit lacking but people will get hyped again eventually once the anime starts.
Btw the manhwa was popular for its art. The story wasn't that bad though. Let's see if the anime can capture those moment.
@FZREMAKE That's more like a bubble effect.
KnY had a strong start. I was in Japan by the end of July and at World Cosplay Summit there was a lot of KnY cosplayers around, ufotable café was full on KnY mode, and you could see all things around there indicating it was a successful anime before ep 19 (which would air at Aug 10th).
Growth on MAL was solid overall, without being treated as mid/unpopular before 19 nor getting a huge influx of members right after it.
If anything, there was an extra dose of hype among influencers due how pretty 19 was, but that was it.

And I guess you're right about SL.
If I'm to add anything, it got extra attention on manga sites because it hits very hard male teens demographic, which snowballed into being even more popular and sought by that public.

This will probably end up as the the largest member anime starting this season (but I don't think it'll catch up to Frieren), albeit I don't think it'll do great in terms of score with that animation.

@RodIshiCi Yeah I know about Kny's popularity even before ep 19. Heck even before it aired, it generated significant buzz due to it being animated by the same studio that did Fate. Now that studio was finally working on a shonen manga and it did generate hype amongst many fans. Ep 19 was like an explosion in hype that overshadows its initial popularity.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

Honestly a huge part as to why the hype doesn't seem too big, is largely because the manhwas that have been animated have been pretty bad. For me personally the god of highschool was one of the worst anime of that year. And tower of god was the exact definition of average. So I do feel like ppl are kinda being wary of how this one will pan out. I know the source material is loved, and I know the trailers look amazing. But that's exactly what I thought with god of highschool as well.

We'll see

Well, it's specifically because Solo Leveling is the most popular Manhwa (Korean Manga, was probably mentioned in other comments but I'll say it again).

And it isn't technically an Isekai, but it's full of Isekai elements.

I would say that it essentially represents a genre of Manhwa, the power fantasy genre to be specific. But how it rose to the top of that genre in the first place is a mystery to me, there wasn't really any logic to it. I guess the best explanation I have is that it's the "most streamlined" in terms of fulfilling requirements on a checklist, but that's in no way a good thing if you're looking for actual storytelling.

But truthfully, its popularity is bizarre to me. It's extremely boring and overrated if you don't immediately buy into the premise of "overpowered, badass MC make story good hurr durr."

But yeah, Winter 2024 is sort of a dead season.
