For decent female characters, I'd like to recommend Madoka Magica and Skip Beat.
If you want more investment type stories, then Haikyuu and Ousama Ranking (currently airing) would be great.

I am going to recommend you an anime but it’s not really like your lie in April but it’s good and my mom liked it it’s called Erased. In Japanese it’s called Boku dake ga inai machi. It’s really good I recommend it! I feel like your mom will really like(Mine sure did)
