yeah, I gave re zero a 9 but after a couple years the more I think back after watching a million other anime I really think it wasn't the greatest. I left it as 9 out of respect because it was one of the shows that got me really into anime. season 2 hasn't really had me trapped, still good tho imo.

Apparently you gave Goblin Slayer an 8. I wonder how will you score goblin slayer again if you did a rewatch of that anime. That's the only anime that I can't comprehend why someone would like it

I commented about this on a thread down below, but thought this'd make a good topic and I'd like to see if anyone can relate.

I usually don't end up re-watching a lot of stuff, but recently I decided to try and re-watch Re:Zero so I could catch up with season 2. It's been around 3 years since I watched the first season.

It definitely wasn't as good as I remember. It's watchable, but I wouldn't give it a 10 like I originally did. Maybe nostalgia played a part in it originally. Or maybe it's just because I vaguely remember what happens and nothing will compare to the first watch. Either way, it's really unfortunate and it actually makes me feel guilty that I didn't enjoy it as much. But, tastes can change over time. I dropped it after episode 13.

For me, I guess the initial appeal of Isekai was the excitement of the main protagonist being transported to another world. It was fresh, until you've seen it more than a handful of times. Then, it's up to a series to be enjoyable beyond that if that makes sense?

So, has anybody else had a similar experience? Highly regarded a series/movie originally, and upon re-watching it, been disappointed?

You should've read the source material instead of rewatching it. Damn, it's a shame. Read my profile to understand. I also didn't like Re:ZERO on any of my watches until I read the WN.

the goblin slayer dude is a cool character :D. if I watched it again I probably would definately give it a lower score. I think that it is still upper tier on the isekai/light novel, basically because of the goblin slayer dude, everything else was really not that great hahaha. that sort of genre really is typically pretty bad outside of a few lol

I've just rewatch Bakemonogatari, and for me, the second time was more enjoyable. But I think it's because of the show : at first I didn't fully understand what was happening, but now, I could watch it and have a better understanding of the complexity of the show. So for this type of show I think it is necessary to have a rewatch.

I want to go back and watch it again in retrospect for similiar reasoning, the series is 10/10 in my books anyway tho lol

yeah its usually like this cos of diminishing marginal utility(hopefully i used this term correctly 😅) tho it is still as exciting if i completely forgot about what happen and i usually feel some kind of nostalgia. But when it comes to the scenes that I feel very strongly about, e.g violet evergarden episode 8, I would always feel emotional rewatching it. So i guess it depends on how much I feel in touch with the scenes

The second experience will allways be worse than the first.Because since you will know what will happen you dont look as much forward to the plot and start noticing the flaws.
that's false, and the reason you stated is in fact an argument for why you can enjoy a rewatch more than a first watch. you put it in a bad way, but knowing the story allows you to concentrate on details, and/or on interpretation, and allows you to appreciate the show more.
example : I watched 2001 a space odyssey 2 years ago, didn't like it or found it anything special, rewatched it a year ago, it became my favourite movie.
that said, a rewatch will generaly be less enjoyable than a first watch imo, but not alwais is my point. (also, even in the case of it being a little less enjoyable, great art pieces are still worth re-watching)
