So, to begin with, you might study the anatomy of folds, such as what is a pipe fold, what is a 1 point fold, what is a 2 point fold, what is a zig-zag fold, etc. Then really think about how gravity is creating these folds. The next step after that is, how to think about the material itself. Some materials are more resistant to folding than others. Some materials are thicker and I would also suppose the tightness of the material also makes a difference. Then you want to imagine forms within the clothing. Another often overlooked aspect is the seams of clothing. These strips that secure loosely hanging cloth create tensions and folds as well. This is how you study drapery. |
