It looks pretty good, my only note is the armpit, it's too big... I loved the facial expression in it.

Lovely colors you used there, and the background is very nice, aside from the arms being a bit small, it looks prefect to me.

Can't really find any faults except the shirt seems to be facing a strange way compared to the body. But I don't think that would really matter ^.^

That looks like the beginnings of a decent drawing. Since it looks like you were going for realism, I have some advice for your head anatomy. The first thing I would advise is to recess the eye further into the socket. It is a very common mistake and it occurs because there is an intersection of two planes there that give the illusion that the eye is closer to the nasal bone than it really is. Another noticeable area is the lack of a supercillary arch and orbital bar where your eye socket meets the frontal bone. You can really get some depth and understanding of where the corner of the eye socket is by showing where the temporal plane meets the zygomatic arch along the pillar of the eye, but you have to be very careful of the phrasing of your lines or tone there, because you don't want it to appear overworked. But the pillar of the eye is a distinctive feature on the head. Especially since the corners of the eyes are very strong visual queues that tell us whether the head is tilted up or down by the relationship to the top of the ear. The same goes for the bottom of the ear and the bottom of the nose. Good luck, it looks great and I hope you can apply some of this.

This is really good. I think a good portrait has that living feeling that makes you feel like it's staring back at you. Even with the paint strokes having such a loose feel to it, (almost impressionist) the gesture was captured very well. Great job.

I think when I look at this I can already get an idea of how you work. You probably tend to jump right in and overwork the details without really getting a sense of the whole picture. I get this feeling from how detailed you make things like the hair and and clothing; but things are not in proper perspective and they just don't fit together quite like you see them in your head. The first picture really needs some focus on your overlapping in order to add depth and show that one object is in front of the other; This is a crucial point involving all views with extreme forshortening (One of the more difficult visual problems in art). One shoulder is also visually higher than the other; can you see why? These are things that people with absolutely no art background can read immediately when looking at a drawing. Start with something loose before you tighten up your pencil.

It's a reference to a kind of lens/lighting effect produced in photography; (in illustration) you create soft focus by producing a haze around edges of light, where light touches. Example.

Most commonly used in soap operas, portrait photography, and (heeeeeeee) porn.

Anyway, there is nothing particularly wrong with it, but it does send a certain message. Like, I would expect the above illustration to appear in an eros game.

If you don't mind my asking, how did you produce the effect? I like what you were trying to do with surface scattering (I think that is what it is called>...? tired.) The lighting in the picture is good. But remember that the material that it's bouncing off is going to send the light to different lengths. So unless we are looking at the picture through a soft-focus lens, we shouldn't be able to see the light reflecting off of certain objects unless it is hitting something else.

Does that make sense? XD I just realized I was too tired to try to figure out what I am saying. XD I am going to bed. :D

Oh, I see. I just wanted to try some BLOOM-type effects because I see it done with some anime-type art. Sometimes those filters can help to tie the piece together.

It's done by one of the layer settings in SAI. I forgot which...luminosity? Then you just paint it in with whatever color with a brush. PS has the same thing I think. You kinda have to fiddle around with the layer settings.

But yeah I don't think I'll do that for my next drawing. I'll try directly painting everything (which is tough) but I've wanted to do that for quite a while.

Well, another method you could try is

>paint light in new layer
>gaussian blur filter @low percentage
>lower layer opacity/ change layer settings

But painting light directly does have the best look. It's just time consuming :B

Does sai have different blend settings for brushes? (In PS, you can use the same blending technique that you would with layers, except with a brush; it's how I got the color effects on his scarf in my picture up there)

Scrummy-

I'm pretty sure PS doesn't work via "blending". Rather low-opacity brush settings with different textures is how people "mix" colors (more layering I believe).

You can change the look of your strokes by changing the texture, brush opacity/dilution/blending in SAI. I will try to get the brush look of the artists I like, but I believe they use Painter. Since painter seems overwhelming right now I'm just going to try to make things work in the tiny but powerful (5mb) SAI.

In photoshop, you can blend in two different ways. You can paint on separate layers and change the blending modes to achieve a particular effect. In this particular case I think ScrumYummy was stating that you can set a new layer on dodge or screen and paint with a soft-brush on low opacity to get that soft focus lighting. When mixing colors to blend, however, this is usually done on the same layer by turning on your opacity jitter under transfer settings of the brush menu. Then when you blend with the new color, you use your alt key (eyedropper) to select in-between colors to blend them. They sort of have different goals basically. The former method is meant to enhance our atmospheric perspective with different types of lighting and the latter may be used to create new colors or blend two values. I haven't tried painter yet either, but I hear great things about it.
