Yeah, that round had many flaws. And it seems no one cared to monitor those forums anymore. -___- Only wish I'm an admin, but as you already read Hino's reply, I cannot become one -__- Oh well, I could really care less anyway. As soon, I'll be saying goodbye to everybody on MAL for a while....due to a long hiatus. As I'm watching anime and logging onto MAL in secret without my parents knowing it, and the worst news is that, my brother is still little (5 yrs old) and soon he will be sharing my room. So doors cannot be locked anymore, as my mum will be checking in quite often. Even during sleeping hours. And also, my brother will be annoying me much often once that happens (but hope not :/). So time on MAL would be reduced to only few mins on campus of my university. So...*sigh*....
Oh no, that sucks!! ><
Why do you watch anime or log on MAL in secret from your parents? Would they be mad at you if they knew? And sharing your room with your little brother will be really annoying...
That really sucks!!! How can they deprive you of anime?? That's just one leisure activity like another!! T__T
Yeah...it sucks T_T
Well, my parents hated anime, even though I rarely talked to them about anime but, my stepdad hated the drawing style (which he thinks it looked cheap) and complained that the characters do not have much movement (such as the blinking of the eyes) etc. and always complains about it once I mentioned it, while by mum just hated cartoons and such in general (except Tom & Jerry and any old cartoons for some reason, and certain episodes of Spongebob...as some humour were for adults too). One big problem in here is that, all the anime on TV are all censored and severely edited, and mostly on the shounen category. So the dialogues and music are different compare to the original Japanese version and the target age group became for children instead of for teens and adults. You won't find any 18+ anime here unless you buy them in an anime/manga shop (which I never went, as I don't watch any dubbed versions anymore, and also due to being a closet anime fan obviously). So they don't even know the other genres out there. To be honest, I didn't know that anime has other genres until I saw a video of ranking anime opening and ending songs on Youtube last year and encountered Tamayura Hitotose, which I realized it's in the slice of life category, and that was my very first slice of life anime, lol. You won't find any slice of life anime here other than the crude cartoons such as Family Guy, South Park and The Simpsons -___-
My mum hated video games, and sometimes gives a sigh everytime she sees me playing. So I also play games in secret now (during holidays when no one home), unless my friends come over to visit, only then I play games in front of her presence...until she tells me to shut it off as she finds it annoying (though I didn't really care, as my parents always go somewhere everytime my firends come to visit. So when she comes back home, my friends were about to go anyway), since she hated games that involve fighting, as she finds them noisy. My stepdad doesn't mind games, but soimetimes he tells my mum that I played some, so in the end, same thing. So this is the same with anime, she'll be indeed mad if she sees me watching anime, as she thinks anime are childish and will mention something about studying and such and I hate her complainings. But the difference is that my stepdad hates anime too. So yeah...life is hard when being a closet anime fan...
I wouldn't never have thought that it was so serious. I just can't understand the way of thinking of your mother and your stepfather. Everyone should have to get fun with what they want. Hearing your mother, it seems that she would like you to sit down and do nothing apart from studying... Not even game playing!!
Actually, my mother has nearly the same thought as yours and your stepfather about anime as she doesn't like the graphics of it ("what a bad drawing!") and thinks that it's childish. When I was younger, she complained about me watching Pokemon on Tv (I was not aware that it was anime at that time) and then about Naruto. But she didn't prevent me from watching anime. Although she hasn't changed her mind, now I can talk with her a bit about anime and even MAL (I told her about the attacks and how I was pissed off...) I think that she now knows that I'm serious about anime and that was not a "passing fancy", especially since I began to take Japanese courses last year.
But I don't know what to say about the behaviors of your parents, especially if they both hate anime... (as my father doesn't care)
Just enjoy to the full of the time they are not home to play games and watch anime. Damn... hiding the fact you watch anime AND games... that really really sucks! So much that I can't say more than that sorry T__T
Yeah, it's serious indeed -__- Though not that much serious years ago. University is hard anyway, so I guess my mom would have a point regarding studying. But during the holidays years ago, she knew I would've played some video games anyway, even not in her presence. But at least that's the only thing she knew about. As I played games when she was around before (which was years ago). But now she prefers me to grow up a bit, so games would've considered ''childish' for her too. So if I play some now in her presence, things would've be different compare to back then, which is why I play games in secret too from now on (during the holidays....exception is when I have my friends visit me.). If I tell her that I watch anime, then things would get much messier. I used to watch Pokemon and similar shows when she was at home (years ago), but since back then, I wasn't really into anime that much, so she didn't really say anything, though did complain that I watched too much sometimes. But now I'm 20, things would be different, so now I had to keep my like for anime a secret, as her thoughts on anime never changed. I hated her complainings, which is the main reason why I watch anime in secret. Once she starts complaining, she never stops. My stepdad doesn't really mind, which is similar to your dad. But he tells her either intentionally, or accidentally. The latter more likely. So to prevent that, I keep anime a secret from him too (he does complain about anime, but more lenient than my mum). So what I said in that long reply applies to how the thing is now. Really wish my mum can at least understands me a bit, but I never told her that I'm seriously into anime, just due to the fact that she gets angry so easily that it's fearful.
Sorry for the late reply... busy with university works and all... Won't be long.
So yeah as university is really difficult, sure you have to study but in between, what is better than some anime or games? That's why I still don't understand your mother reaction. You are 20, she should let you do what you want. You'll take the "responsibility" if it makes you less studying. But it seems that she has strong "stereotypes" about anime (childish, ...) so no wonder that you really don't want to hear her complainings again and then keep it secret...
I just hope that this situation will improve, even if it seems unlikely to do soon...
Enjoy as much anime as you can anyway!!!!! :D
It's ok ^^ I'm busy myself. 1 month before the exams....so after this reply, I'll be on a semi-hiatus. I may/may not reply during the hiatus...depends on how busy I am.
Well, that's her. Nothing can be changed. She sometimes complains about other stuff usually too (I should've said it in my previous reply). Due to her moaning, I never told her about being an anime fan. So she doesn't complain about anime and being childish etc. Plus, she is stressed sometimes over my little brother, or over my stepdad...as both have arguments sometimes over various reasons. So no point in making the situations worse :/
Well, thanks...though like you said, it is unlikely right now...
Yep! I can still watch some anime during midnight or so as I don't study after midnight, my brain just shuts off.
Anyway, it's 2:45 am here now, lol. I'm off to bed soon after 1 or 2 episodes (unless I dozed off during an episode...hahaha).
See you after your semi-hiatus then ~
As you know, I also have January exams so I will do the same, sadly T_T
(Actually I'm already in kind of hiatus right now, I've been so inactive these last few days!! ><)
Good luck with yours! ^_^
@ptitejuju: Yeah, you told me before, we're in the same situation T_T Well, best of luck in your exams too ^_^ And thanks! ^^ See ya then...or in some forum posts, as I'll still log in sometimes.
