CCZilla said: Let's be honest. To those complaining about DVD prices, they're nothing compared to Japan's. We actually have it lucky in comparison. They get two eps per DVD, from what I understand, whereas we get an average of four or five. The problem is, in some cases the fansubbers do a better job than the official subbers. |

Because my friend and I agree on this. The problem with official subbers is that they try too hard to Americanise things, first of all, and that it's just another bottom line to them and they don't care about the shows on the same level as the fansubbers do. That's the way I look at it. |

That's the way I look at it. It's not just localization, sometimes they change the demographic. For a drastic change, like Cardcaptor Sakura being edited into a more shoujo show, to Kaiji on Joost being dumbed down for 5 year olds. "Darned it!" Unforgivable. |

Leon-Gun said: That is pretty much my point, but... well, don't get me wrong, I still watch a lot of anime before it's licensed and I don't always like the releases of licensed anime. For example, I would like to see a decent release of the original Gundam TV series. I'm not particularly fond of the "movie" versions and the TV series was released dub only over here. As it is, my only option is importing the Japanese sets, but the price for them is a joke.I applaud your patience. Yeah, I watch plenty of fansubs, but I am excited to see what Funimation will license and I'm sure I will be buying some of what they license. I also look forward to picking up Nanoha, Maria-Sama ga Miteru, and especially Aria on DVD as they are released. Watching anime on DVD rules. |

Same deal here. My MAL gets updated with the stuff I watch on my computer so all I have to do is link folks to it instead of writing out a long list. Anime in the US is aimed mainly at teenagers. Common sense says teenagers depend on their parents for money. Said parents will likely not condone their kids wasting precious time on "cartoons". I watched one or two anime before I got in contact with fan-made subtitles, which allowed me to learn a lot more about the genre. I now own enough DVDs to wallpaper my dorm floor. I have nothing against dubs/liscensed anime, but the truth of the matter is that anime wouldn't be anywhere near as profitable today if our only source of it came in the $20 every 3 months for 3-5 episode doses that many anime companies expect us to make do with. That is the reason why Japanese animation companies allowed fansubs in the first place (back in the day, younguns). Also, I would like to see dubs of Kaiji and Akagi, just because they could be very good series to hear in my native english. |
