MC have been standouts in entertainment, since the beginning. Like it or not plain mc that blends in is not a good selling point. Lycoris would not be so popular in japan if Chisato and Takina where normal. It is pretty rare you have a mc that looks normal unless it ties into the plot.

I think if they wanted to display the David next to something of equal mastery over detail, they would have easily done it don't you think? it's not like we lack talented sculptors nowadays.

2- You forget that some art is not for everyone. An artist can have talent and passion but if their art is not akin to your tastes you're not going to like it. So thinking that it'll undoubtedly instill awe is using absolutes. And that kind of thinking is from the times when Van Gogh died poor because people didn't immediately like his paintings which were done with talent and passion.

3- I honestly don't think they're poorly drawn compared to the others. In all cases their proportions are consistent and their chosen details are always there. Hair styles are resected, expressions don't look wack and the proper shading is there.
Do you mean they're not detailed? Then Chisato and specially Takina don't have many details either. Their faces are actually quite plain. One of the others even has freckles. The difference is that their eyes, noses and mouths are made and positioned to look better aesthetically.

And if you don't mean details and proportions then what is a poorly drawn character to you? It's confusing because you started using the word ugly and now you're saying they're poorly drawn. Might sound like it but they're not the same thing. So what is it?

You seem to be jumping between character design and animation quality for your argument. You question if the commander is a woman, so you must have a problem with her design, and if that's the case you questioning her gender proves it has fulfilled it's purpose. Don't you think that, in a show were there are many conventional looking women, if they wanted her to be "normal" looking they would have done so?

4- It sounds to me like your expectation of cute girls is playing a bigger role than your capacity to appreciate a story well put together. If that's the case, like I said, that's fine, but you saying that they're lazy or poorly done seems very misinformed and arbitrary.

5-Help me understand, if you will, what, from the images you shared, shows lack of effort from the animators. I've shared my opinions on why I think they aren't poorly done. The designs are "ugly" but their uglyness is consistent with the rest of the show's artistic efforts and choices.

As someone who is an artist who can draw anime illustrations, I totally get what you mean.
An example would be Lucy from the cyberpunk anime. I personally don't find her sexually attractive, but she does look very aesthetically pleasing.
I personally agree with op, I don't like looking at characters that aren't pleasing to look at, and that's a totally valid reason to drop a show.

The people that are saying aesthetically pleasing = horny must know nothing about art.
I can find a combination of colors pleasing to look at (color theory), but that doesn't mean I find it sexually attractive.

Subjectivity is implied in a post where OP says that certain characters don't please their aesthetic senses. You say most people are smart enough to realize that this is up to subjectivity, but half the thread is filled with people calling OP a retard or a porn-addict.

I don't know why people are making such a big deal out of this. I personally don't think it's good enough of a reason to drop the show, since the main characters look quite pleasing to me and the animation in general was pretty good. However, when watching this I also thought that the characters that OP mentioned as examples look kind of weird. They are orthodox looking, and are drawn and look differently than most characters in your average anime.

It's a ploy to enhance the attractiveness of the two main characters, a good looking person looks even more good looking, when surrounded by average looking people. Could also be seen as a lack of importance in the anime, no noticeable features, relegated to the background type of characters.

I'm generally indifferent when it comes to the designs. Personally, I think the side characters look fine but the only character I really liked was Takina because of my preference of girls with long black hair.

Personally, I think Chisato is kind of overrated and a bit grating with her bubbly nature. Not saying she's a bad character, but there's a reason why I'm into Kuudere girls the most.
