Ishikura played it very smart. Now Asai can barely see anything.

As for the art, this time I loved the depiction of Ishikura’s dark figure with the light overlapping it. I’m honestly a big fan of all the art that gets us into Asai’s headspace. The other moment was when we saw the overlay of the house to show Asai’s strategy going forward. The way it erased parts of the world to show it all from the exterior was akin to Fukumoto’s own art.

When Ishikura stumbled Asai sprinted to the bathroom to get time to think and he made a good plan. Instead of staying in one location like that he got a clock set for 6am(as he wouldn’t be able to tell the time with his eyes) and planned to use his advantage, his legs. By using the stairs and the ladder he can forever outmaneuver Ishikura. All he needs to do is escape for around 12 hours although I can’t imagine actually heading on the route back will be easy by any means. The strategy has worked well so far and totally took Ishikura off guard, his composure broke as Asai ran upstairs. The scenario somewhat reminds of Jojo’s Phantom Blood where Jonathan has to fight Jack the Ripper and he comes to the conclusion that he can only see Jack due to his light source but Jack can spot him due to it too. A part of me thinks that it would serve Ishikura to lose the light because it would leave Asai completely blind however due to how Ishikura is walking he would signify where is with sound and not be able to see well either so I think that may not be a good move after all.

This chapter continued to expand on the relationship between these two and it brought up some important facts. In the beginning Ishikura did seem to truly regret killing Sayuri and as he cried here I don’t doubt that. And now, he seems to blame Asai for it and this leads to Asai’s strange behavior. If Ishikura is right about Asai getting Sayuri pregnant then his initial response of “the other mountain climber?” feels abnormal. The next thing that got to me from the very beginning is how easily Asai forgave Ishikura and put it behind him, declaring he would keep the secret until he dies. I had initially taken that as being for Ishikura’s sake but maybe it was for his own interests! If he was in a relationship with Sayuri and she was pregnant when she died, and then a month later Asai was engaged to another person it suggests that he was seeing her before that month. Who gets engaged in a month!? Did Asai cheat on “the only daughter of the president of Kodanshoji” with Sayuri? Was she and the baby actually a burden? Did Asai really manipulate Ishikura? These are the questions being raised in my head, but for the last one I can’t imagine putting the two together would be a good way to get her killed like that unless there’s more to the story, and if the Sayuri pen is all that Ishikura needed to create this story then he could have made up the whole story to relieve himself of his guilt.

These two are definitely complicated. I didn't expect this character focus going in!
