@LoveYourSmile Are you implying that I have no taste because I watch a lot of different anime without trying to categorize it?
@RobertBobert I did not say anything about you personally in my original response, merely shared my broad vision on the subject. You asked for elaboration, you got it. I understand it might sound unpleasant, or you may disagree, so feel free to completely disregard it. I personally doubt even existence of a taste (bad or good, doesn't matter) in case of such an non selective consumption pattern, unless it's someone's job to torture themselves by watching sick amount of lowkey material.

@LoveYourSmile Non selective? I don't think that to have any taste you have to strictly limit yourself to one type of work. After all, this is the consumption of entertainment content, not the construction of a media image by some public figure, lmao. I am interested in a variety of anime and I satisfy this desire by getting acquainted with a variety of shows that interest me. On the contrary, I would call such attempts to limit oneself for the sake of “preserving proper taste” immature and ridiculously pretentious. Of course, when you consume tons of anime and live action content over the years, you are guaranteed to encounter both masterpieces and complete garbage, but this is the reality of life and I have never seen anything strange about it.

But one way or another, I’m glad that I’m not hearing about this from the hardcore “I only watch shows with real or potential yuri,” because for some reason I remembered you this way after our last meeting. If my impression were correct, it would be strange.

What do you think defines good or bad taste in anime?

Whether it's real or not, quality is subjective, so how I define good taste is whether the person really likes their favorites.

In general, how important is tastes in your interactions with other fans?

I wouldn't assume a negative attitude toward someone based purely on their taste, but it does matter. For example, I would like to talk about anime, which we both love.

Like you said, all taste is subjective, and not everyone will agree on what is "good taste" or "bad taste".

I love a majority of genres of anime & manga, but not every single thing that I've watched or read. There's a few things that I've liked in one series, that I did not like in another, and it's almost always based on execution.

That being said, I don't find myself drawn to isekai as a genre (like 90% of the time, but there's still a few I've enjoyed). It's just very "meh" for me.

I feel like I can't really get down with the hard-core isekai fans because of this. I don't know even how to really explain why I think it's a "bad taste" indicator, outside of the fact that I just... don't find any enjoyment in the scenario of "travelling to another world to have a harem of hot girls and a singular token loli".

Which leads to my other "bad taste" indicator - harem. I find very little enjoyment from it (again, I've watched a few that I liked), but more than that, it's just giving me gooner bait ecchi slop. Different strokes for different folks I suppose, but if I met someone who only seems to watch harem anime... I might avoid talking to them about anime just in general.

I think the line that I draw between "good" or "bad" taste just genuinely lies within the sphere of what I consider to be a series with substance, versus a series that only has novelty keeping it afloat (and by novelty, I mean waifus to sell merch).
Everyone should enjoy what they like regardless of what anyone else thinks, though. Just because I'm not interested in something doesn't mean that I think NO ONE should be interested in it either.

Its all subjective, and anyone can like what they want, I'm not gonna judge them or say they have bad tastes. I don't like Steins Gate, or Cowboy Bebop, So i have no right to judge. Just enjoy any Japanese cartoon you want.

@LoveYourSmile Can you give me an example of this kind of thinking?

@LostSpectre So, you don’t take seriously people who seriously operate and argue with such concepts?

@SuperAdventure I follow the approach of Roger Ebert, who said that films should be judged primarily by how well they satisfy their target audience and follow the rules and needs of the genre. For example, American Pie is a great comedy because it sets many of the big trends in its genre and is great for the target audience of cheesy teen comedies. Although the film itself is quite cheesy and vulgar with humor of the “lol, they are virgins” level.
@RobertBobert Well that's basically where I'm coming from. You should have pointed out that I basically answered your thread wrong- I assumed you wanted to know how to decide if an anime was done in bad taste; rather than rating other viewers' tastes.
The whole idea of rating the tastes of others is self-centering, makes the entire anime experience about oneself rather than about the media (which was my approach)

@SuperAdventure I apologize for any possible misunderstandings. The point of my topic was how you define good or bad tastes, and whether this affects your interactions with people.

I don't believe in such a concept. You can justify why you enjoy a piece of art from any perspective. I may not always understand however, it is still a valid point of view.

@BilboBaggins365 In what sense “justify”, could you please clarify?

@RobertBobert All art, I think can be enjoyed. I mean there is some modern art out there I think is garbage, and probably is just there to money launder however, if someone comes and says yeah I actually like it, and gives frankly any reason, how could I deny them? I can only disagree, however, I have no right to say to that person, you can't enjoy this, unless it involves actually hurting or infringing on someone IRL.

@BilboBaggins365 That is, if conventional porn or erotica is made with high quality, with full passion and compliance with the laws, you have no problems with this?

@RobertBobert Are you asking me if porn can be appreciated in an artistic sense, rather than just I am horny? Sorry just a bit confused by this comment. I mean I would say yeah it could be. Most porn usually is just made with eroticism in mind however, I have found stuff within porn/erotica that did have good narratives, character moments or even tackle interesting issues, mainly in VNs, or manga. Rare however, it's there.

And again, that's just me. My point is I can't really judge someone for enjoying works that I don't get, or can't understand liking. We can have debates and I can give my point of view however, that is it. Largely I don't like snobs, because of their tendency to go after the person with "bad taste" and I just find that frankly kinda juvenile. It's interesting honestly to hear why some people might enjoy stuff I don't care for. I am not going to judge them, simply because I don't understand it.

@BilboBaggins365 I just took a radical example to better demonstrate the attitude. Although, as far as I remember, unlike erotica, any pornography is considered to be aimed only at certain needs and therefore, too specific content. Although the line between them is also a separate subject for debate. I watched a film about Bettie Page and much of what in her time was considered extreme porn without crossing the final border, now would not even always be considered something lewd.
