Never mind the fact that we got censorship. The bigger problem is that after they censored the shit out of the scenes, they went ahead and tried to adapt the omake bits, whose entire purpose was fanservice, anyway. The bit where the girls talk about Sensei's underwear was also entirely altered, then stretched out for no reason. The girls went from talking about her underwear after it comes up naturally to just randomly deciding to talk about it on the rooftop with Boob Lady staring at them the whole time. It felt so weird watching it the first time. Now I know it's because it was forced.

Not to mention the bath scene, whose entire point was to emphasize that Boob Lady has ginormous boobs, and Ass Lady Sensei has a ginormous ass (And for Boob Lady to notice she has real horns), and both of them displease Oto-chan. Here it gets turned into a big nothing burger where some poorly-adapted side character pervs out over absolutely nothing while stalking the girls from behind a utility pole.

Not to mention that one scene where the whole joke is "What underwear do they use?", except (predictably), the punchline is neither Mari, nor we, get to see anything. So we wasted whatever fucking time they put into making the scene in the first place.

And then my final point of annoyance: Oto's outfit. You know the one. They cut out all the fanservice, then they dress her like a cheap whore out of nowhere?

There's a zone in the Wholesome-Porn Continuum where you have to either dial it back, or make porn. Given that this series had no intention of even trying, they should have dialed it back, cut out all these ecchi scenes, and stopped dragging down the pacing of the show to make padded bits they have no intention of paying off.

It looked cheaped as hell, that's the problem. If you gave the manga to a studio like Shaft it would've been a completely different show.

@Saku33 I always thought the SOL stuff in this show was the worst, most irritating part. It always felt like a chore to listen to everyone just live their lives and shoot the shit. It turns out that these SOL bits are apparently not only much shorter in the manga, usually dedicated to a single gag before moving on (Like Boob Lady turning into a kid in the bath because it's convenient, or the girls talking about Sensei's underwear), but many of them lean on the fanservice as a bonus. If you take out the fanservice, then stretch half a panel of content into several minutes of animation, all you end up with is padding. And that's exactly what the anime did: Cut the content in less than half, then extend the scene out several minutes anyway.

I sat there bored and baffled by the rooftop scene in the anime. But when I saw it in the manga, I enjoyed it as the tiny SOL bonus gag that it was supposed to be. It was in the classroom, Boob Lady was being called away by Sensei, and then Mari, after wondering briefly why she was calling Boob Lady over, had an actual, reasonable segue over to her underwear- as opposed to the rooftop where it just pops up out of fucking nowhere. Not to mention the focus being taken away from the underwear by also turning into an "Oto-chan pampering" scene, which muddies the purpose of the scene even more.

No. If Shaft had gone balls out making this exact same show, it'd still be bad.Well-animated shit is still shit.

Yea, that's the thing. I read the manga way before the anime came out and enjoyed the heck out of it. The anime was decent enough but the censorship was annoying amongst other flaws.

@Cyberslasher No, the problem is they didn't want to draw boobs, but they stretched 1-3 page boob scenes into multi-minute-long SOL bits anyway. We could literally have just gotten colored static shots of those scenes and it'd still be an improvement. And if static shots would make it better, then it's not the animation.

Oh yeah the anime made me want to read the manga as poorly adapted as it was. It made me read the manga. If I read the manga than watched this anime, I would give it a lower rating. I gotta say the last two episodes of the anime was what made me read the manga because it was strange. Like poorly written wrapping things up… and when I read the manga about the cat-girl curiosity… I nearly cried. It was really good.

@Suzeray87 Funny thing is I stopped just after that random-ass cat dance. Now I'll get to see if this was in the original, or if this was the anime adding more random bullshit in to pad for time.

I love the cat dance… it was so wild. In the anime it doesn’t explain why the cats dance… but in the manga it’s actually pretty tragic.

@Suzeray87 Wait, they just leave the cat dance as a big lipped alligator moment in the anime?

To be honest, I don’t even remember the whole dancing cat musical during the mermaid curiosity arc in the manga. My recommendation is watch up to episode 10… then read where it leaves off in the anime. Because episode 11 is when the cat girl confronts them. And the manga has a really big moment for the main female character… while the anime took a turn and stripped that moment from her.

In fact the anime starts wrapping the series up… while the manga is introducing more characters and more plot threads, while also reintroducing characters from previous arcs.

Maybe that’s why I liked the anime so much. By the way… you mean the art style… not the animation. That’ll be asking too much.

Personally the sound elements in adaptations make it near impossible for me to enjoy Manga in lieu of it. So I simply enjoy the show for what it is and leave it at that. There is always something else on the horizon, and so its not like I am short on things to watch. In fact there are too many, but I digress.

As for the fan service I felt the show had enough of it. I did not ever feel like I needed more. Also the randomness and or lack of context as is common in adaptations can sometimes be enjoyable too.

@LordKirkis Whether it does or doesn't have enough is beside the point. The staff spent time animating fanservice segments, then gutted them- which turns the exercise into a waste of time. Imagine cutting out a 10 minute sex scene, then replacing it with 10 minutes of hand holding, or, if you're really lucky, 10 minutes of talking about sex. That's what this show did. Repeatedly. It could just have avoided the scene entirely if it wasn't interested in doing it instead of making me slog through this.

That's what happens with modern anime studios and directors. They think they know better, so they censor, and they are also extremely self-centered, wanting to "leave their mark" on someone else's IP, so they change around the story in the most bizarre way. Completely cutting sensei out of the bath scene, the whole anime original ending which was not necessary. It was all very bizarre, especially all these bootlickers in any discussion.
Not just this series either, it's happening to anything remotely lewd. Any and all fanservice and exposure, even if obviously more artsy/thematically done gets wiped clean unless it's nearly porn like Gushing or Reviewers. I've been basically exclusively reading manga for the last few years and not watching anything since it's gotten so bad. It's extremely annoying and disheartening seeing a series you like get a disrespectful adaptation.
Also the weird anime only yuri selfcest kiss scene for the finale of vtuber arc was really strange and was obviously just the director's perversion snuck in, extremely uncomfortable to watch considering that scene was supposed to be a wholesome farewell.

@RKGS Wait, the kiss was also anime only? So basically the ONE episode they do any kind of fanservice, and they decide to use it to dress Oto like a cheap whore, and make the dying girl swap spit with her alter ego?

There is nothing particularly, notably gainful in excessive Ecchi.. specially in narratives with enjoyable characters and stories. But that's exactly what you get in some Manga (well many).. and its not because it's the greatest thing in the world. Not at all. It's because it's what sells. Now some Mangakas like the one who authored MIA do have a genuine interest in spreading their strange ideas to others, but generally speaking Ecchi is a means to market and sell things better. Now with Kaii to Otome it appears to be a diluted form of what you expected.. well as an adaptation these things can happen. But its not necessarily a bad thing, Id argue its a good thing as I think we're already overly exposed with perversion as it is.

@LordKirkis Half the series is SOL bits made specifically for Ecchi. What's left if you take that out?

I just finished this anime and I agree 99% with the op.
I would say you could mix ecchi with proper story and for it not be bad and not be porn.
But this studio fucked it up on that part.
Very disappointing for the reasons everyone has mentioned. Basically makes it impossible to recommend this to other people.

@LordKirkis How does that boot taste? Censorship is bad no matter what. Crazy to act like perversion has no place in art when it's been like that for millennia.

@RKGS

Ecchi in art is fine, but its not necessary to have an enjoyable show. And while I do enjoy Ecchi its not exactly an essential piece for me. Sometimes Ecchi actually gets in the way of a shows potential or it's used to elevate what is in truth a poor show.

@LordKirkis Exactly It's just like fighting: It really isn't necessary for a good show. Just imagine how much better the Dragonball series would be if we took out all the violence.

@HyperlinkBlocked

Thats a bad comparison since violence makes up 75% or so of the scenes in DB Series and so it's violence IS essential. Ecchi in Kaii to Otome? not so much.. as demonstrated in the adaptation.

One show where Ecchi might be argued to be essential is Gushing over Magical Girls... even then if you remove most of the Ecchi you'd still have a decent show.

I don't want to say Ecchi is not important.. It can be, but personally it's low hanging fruit; animation quality, writing and sound production each individually are far more important.

@LordKirkis What do you mean "As demonstrated in the adaptation"? They changed the script, and even then, half the scenes were SOL skits meant to be ecchi that fell flat because they got rid of the entire fucking point of the scenes. I don't know if you noticed, but nobody likes the adaptation.

If you take the ecchi our of MahoAko you'd get a boring, generic show about a vaguely sadistic girl who's just pretending to be a good person.

If you don't mind censorship, I suggest you go find a different medium to shit up.

I meant as Kaii to Otome show demonstrated to me.. I thought it to be a very good show. SOL is plenty popular, and has farther reach than Ecchi. Also typically adaptations calls for a new script.

The Ecchi in Magical Girls was very nice but I actually didn’t care for it half the time as I thought other parts of the show had enough quality as to be past the need for abundant Ecchi.

You need to understand that there is more to shows than just Ecchi. Hundreds of artists work on these productions and not all of them care for Ecchi, but a lot of them do care about creating something compelling. So they do it in the best way they can, letting their passion dictate the way. There is nothing wrong with that, specially if the goal is to reach more audiences past the ones who already read the Manga, past the ones who enjoy Ecchi and little else..

My thinking is that you could use a second opinion rather than your typical echo chamber which is of no use to anyone. There is a quality to Kai to Otome believe it or not.. It is a good show, it’s simply not what you wanted. And why fret? There is so much else out there for you.. including the Manga if you so prefer. Not like thats suddenly gone. Well.. you might think "the potential has been lost!" Maybe so, but does it truly matter that this one missed the mark for you? Probably not. And frankly.. we are spoilt as it is.

Finally it's not like I can beat my ideas into you if I keep posting.. so this will be all from me.
