I love it when people categorize others as "typical and "average" to sugarcoat their favourite anime.

You loved the trash drama? Good for you.

off-topic reply:

Trash drama was actually "Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Souls" which you rated highly. DotDS is a 7 from me, and most of that comes from my enjoyment of the first season and the movies animation quality. Still you do have a couple of goodies in my books...

Monster. Tatami Galaxy, Mob Psycho s1 & 2, Diamond Unbreakable, Made in Abyss S1, Attack on Titan, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Princess Mononoke, Asobi Asobase, Violet Evergarden. I like those!

Also Mieruko-chan was actually a good show. I dropped Vinland Saga; I was really confused about the main characters motivation for war and bloodshed. The main character seemed slow to grow mentally, at least up to the point I watched. I remain confused about the shows high ratings because of that. Maybe Ill go back to it at some point.

let me turn this back to you. how do you think other anime fans are so confident in their tastes? do you think it's happenstance?

evidently you have different standards for yourself and others. you do know that everyone is egoistic like this, right? so why not adjust your thinking in consideration of that?

LordKirkis said:
My friend here took one look at my profile and is off saying im going through a "phase" LMFAO.

you're so new to anime that there's no doubt you're going through anything other than a phase — that is, a phase of being new to anime. there's always a development of your taste that comes with that, and i've never heard of anyone IRL or seen anyone on this site immediately having a refined taste in anime. everyone goes through a stage of amazement at the art-form precisely because it isn't like film they've watched or novels they've read. the ideals and aesthetic tendencies are fundamentally different.

LordKirkis said:
Actually this is pretty entertaining if anything. Did you read my post on the show by chance? the other one with specifics....

yes, i read the full post before my other responses. they're okay reasons to enjoy a show. the problem is reasons like those can be found in shows which are much, much shorter (see the anime short film 'Shelter' on YouTube) — without filler for the sake of filler, without one-dimensional cardboard characters (like literally everyone who isn't Zero Two), without random meaningless side-plots which never resolve themselves, without an ending which tries to parody NGE and yet take itself seriously at the same time, without mostly bland dialogue, with mostly bland cinematography, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

the show wastes a lot of time getting to the central themes it could've reach in a much more straightforward, yet much more subtle manner. for most of it's runtime, it doesn't know what it wants to be, and even after it does, it loses sight of them in favour of a wacky, astronomical ending which doesn't make a lot of thematic sense.

welp, just watch Bakemonogatari and you'll see what i mean by the fact that other anime — really good anime with real depth — doesn't waste as much of your time as Darling in the FRANXX does. even 'wasted' time is spent with intelligent dialogue which brings character depth, and there's never just 'a filler episode because why not.'

Notice how you remain comparing DitF to other shows as if it should be inclined to meet those standards or do what those shows do. They are different shows and they should remain different and as unique as they can be. I do understand your grief if you felt DitF was comparably slow to get to the narrative pieces that mattered most to you. I definitely see where you come from with that... that said the part about the ending being wacky or DitF not knowing what it wanted to be doesn't really make sense to me. Because I completely understood what happened at the end, a lot of which was forbode by the picture book... you know the picture book from episode 13. Not only that I re watched the show for the second time and everything from the first half ties in neatly to work its way to second half of the episodes. I don't understand peoples confusion tbh. DitF is far from perfect... nevertheless I think it deserves better than a 7.3. Neon Genesis Evangelion is great as I hear it, but that was ages ago, no?

Still this discourse is a lot better than the one we were having before. I will continue to ignore those other discussions seeing as how we are both very uptight. You are uptight, but so am I... more than you are currently imagining.

I watched an episode of Bakemonogatari recently.... loved the visuals and how abstract it felt in the manner they presented the scenes. I'm not particularly fond of shows filled with plot irrelevant chatter that seemingly overstays its welcome for the sake of appearing smart. And I am not saying that's what it is with Bakemonogatari, but given that episode I am left wondering that. Still I will need to continue watching.

Edit: I am more a video game buff. I pay particular attention to the narrative parts of a video game, character design, graphic design, animation detail, gameplay mechanics, sound design and the composition of the games tracks are all highly considered. All this translates pretty well into my enjoyment of anime too. I've played nearly every game worth mentioning under the sun and I am very proud of it. Some folks believe games cant tell a story, or move you emotionally as a show or a movie can. This is false and very ignorant... games can do the same and sometimes to a greater degree.

I'm not gonna read all that...
here's how I look at this show
I believe this to be a below average mecha, self insert mc , Waifu bait if these terms offend you I'm sorry...
90% of ppl are here for Zero Two bec she's a damn popular waifu (not for me I never considered her one) You may ask why'd you watch it then This question itself say many things about what I mentioned above "Waifu bait" many ppl love dominating cute Waifu like 02 I have a friend myself who love Zero Two (dunno about the anime) But its okay they have their reasons
.. ......... back to the point...... .. . . . . . .
I first heard about Zero two from memes , then the Tu Puton song (idk the acutual name) I was never really curious about waifu I watched it for the plot (yes believe me) as it was my one of first mecha anime after Dal... someone is calling me so I'll end this here...

I am honestly not surprised to see the wide variety of perspectives on this show. The love for the main character; Zero Two is widely recognized and she is the biggest reason for getting into the show to begin with. As a matter of fact, I was drawn to the show because of her overall design and how she referred to a character that was initially unknown to me as "Darling". Yeah certainly that caught my eye, "Darling" and her horns... very unusual I thought and her design is awesome! The rest was history, I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the show for what it was worth. The good and the bad... I personally found more good than bad!

of course, but it requires comparison against some kind standard to determine if something is good or not, that's why i brought up other series.

you foresaw aliens and 'VIRM' and going to outer-space and gigantic mecha Zero Two by episode 13? i get that the book had foreshadowing, anyone could see that, but it literally took one of the wildest, most nonsense turns i've ever seen in anime ending. i don't think even a fan of the show you can honestly deny this, not even to yourself.

much of the dialogue in the Monogatari series is 'plot irrelevant' not because it wants to 'appear smart', but because it's always character relevant. it's also because the original light novel author, NisiOisiN, wrote the series with the intent of telling a story impossible to make into an anime — one of the primary byproducts of this intent is having the plot be driven almost entirely through double-meanings in the visuals and brilliant character writing. most studios wouldn't be ambitious enough to pick up a light novel so intentionally difficult to adapt, but Shaft is basically more ambitious and cocaine-fueled than even studio Trigger. :9

Understood on your first point, and Ill agree to a some degree.

I didn't know that about the monogatari series. That is pretty nuts. I think I can better appreciate the show now. I'll definitely put it on my rotation as Ill have a lot of catching up to do.

About DitF; I see your point... and sure a lot of that came out of nowhere. But then again the mechs with the faces already seemed wacky enough to me, as were the sexual innuendos which initially concerned me as I thought I was going into a particularly shallow show. We obviously have very different perspectives on the second half of the show, and some of this comes from expectations and tastes, which is fine. Heck even music can turn a horrible show into something amazing for me, particularly if the music is relevant to the show and its plot. Overall the flavor of the second half was good to me because it continued to feel oppressive/dark and more or less in line with what I expected, sans some of the things that would surprise anyone (wedding dress space ship Zero Two. That was nutty... still I enjoyed how nutty it was.)

Ill be happy if people at the very least acknowledged those details! Shoot!

Also DotDS is not a 9 man. Nothing about it gave me the impression of a show with amazing script. Instead it felt like your typical Shonen action and plot movie. Some people do enjoy those but I'm too old for those to be considered close to amazing. I definitely expected more after the first season of MiA.

Darling in the Franxx is an amazing show, but you likely missed the point. Darling in the Franxx gets flak and a lower score because many can't appreciate what's actually being presented to them. A lot of the shows symbolism and expressions are lost on them primarily because they come into the show expecting your typical B-Rate action-filled shounen. Darling in the Franxx is a lot greater than that considering the sum of its parts. There are layers to Darling in the Franxx that needs to be explored.

On the surface Darling in the Franxx features child drama and mech fights blended in to a balance. In the span of 24 episodes viewers can appreciate a medley of interesting scenarios; child drama, mech battles, spaceship battles, aliens, beach episodes, innuendos, and purposeful plot/character revelations. This is all fantastic sure, but the show truly soars when all of these things are framed by its primary themes/ideas and then encapsulated in the shows primary focus; the characters Hiro & Zero Two. Through these two characters, and their stories everything is framed to greater detail and perspective. Therein lies the genius and enjoyment of Darling in the Franxx as a whole.

Its a bummer when I see folks complaining about the surface level things in the show while completely overlooking much of its carefully crafted details and ideas. Still its to be expected... not everyone is going to understand things or connect to the degree the showrunners and artist hope viewers do.

Speaking of which the ending.. it isn't sad or bad at all; you simply missed the point. Zero Two wanted one thing more than anything in her life, and that was to be with Hiro which she was granted for all eternity, and even past life after death. Hell she even gets to be human and have babies with her love eternal, Hiro. If that's not a good ending to you then I don't know how else to explain it.

-------------------------------------------------EDIT---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some folks wanted some specific reasons why I loved this show... so here it is.

To give specifics about things I loved about the show...

-Watching Hiro and Zero Two finally find each other and spend precious time together was particularly heartwarming to me, because I really believe these characters went through a lot of unwarranted hell, particularly Zero Two who was as pure and in need of a lot of love as any princess character.

-The OST was absolutely fantastic as were the visual, I think most can agree here. "Hitori" played during the intro to the pictures book was sung by the voice actor of Zero Two. How amazing is that? And what beautiful song and vocal work it is!

-I love some of the inspirations from classics this show employs, Neon Genesis Evangelion was obvious despite me not seeing it yet, but also classics like Beauty & the Beast. (picture book)

-Zero Two and her first beautiful thing being the picture book, a book that itself is highly detailed and intriguing to look at and forebodes of dark times to inevitably come. The "dark times" did indeed come and most people hated it. In truth though they did not come to pass entirely because in actuality Zero Two and Hiro did manage to change their destiny and live happily ever after despite the picture books dark foreboding. This was actually represented by the last picture which was badly drawn by Hiro (he just isn't a great an artist as Zero Two unfortunately :) ).

-I loved the representation of the mythical creature the Jian and how that mythical creature related to the characters and their life as Franxx pilots. Its relevance made a lot of sense thematically and was very endearing.

-Besides the Jian there is a lot of other symbolic things to pick out that relates to the characters and the plot that follows;

-"Strelizia in reference to the flower Bird of Paradise. The flower symbolizes freedom, joy, and paradise. It also represents a good perspective of life."

-The design of the True Apus, its crossing to the far reaches of space and what that meant was profound because it meant a variety of things; a lot of it depressingly sad, a lot of it being quite beautiful.. to the point of confusion. You are basically left wondering weather to root for them or to cry for them. One thing is for sure; Hiro and Zero Two were very certain of what they needed to do and that gave me plenty of reassurance. In the end I was happy about how strongly they loved each other, their friends and the universe as a whole which they did manage to save.

-I found the innocence, love, pain, and struggle the characters experienced very impactful... particularly Zero Two, and Hiro's who's pain resonated with something in me. It all came off very real.

-------------------------------------------------2ndEDIT---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Darling in the franxx I did love cause of the themes and the relationship between zero two and hiro. But just cause you want to present a theme doesn’t mean you can throw all logic out the window and have sloppy writing. Even though the themes of the ending were presented well. The whole space thing just didn’t make sense and was very NGE of them, but it was studio trigger so what can I expect. They just blew everything out of proportion to the point were you just don’t care about anything anymore and you are just along for the ride. Along with the inconsistencies in how characters acted in the last 5 or 6 episodes also was very jarring. This show was one of my favourite, it was one of my highest 8s, up til ep 15, and then after that is dropped to a 6.

See NGE keeps being brought up... to the point that I can hardly have a discussion! (Edit: Just bought the Blu Ray for NGE) For now, can you tell me which characters in particular you found inconsistent?

I am glad you enjoyed Zero Two and Hiro's story at least... personally the space scenes were crazy, but they never seemed bad to me. Maybe it did come in too suddenly, but the show did have to wrap things up quickly. Well... as far as we can tell at least.

-I loved the representation of the mythical creature the Jian and how that mythical creature related to the characters and their life as Franxx pilots. Its relevance made a lot of sense thematically and was very endearing.

-Besides the Jian there is a lot of other symbolic things to pick out that relates to the characters and the plot that follows;

For anyone who it may concern;

I am more of a video game buff. I pay particular attention to the narrative parts of video games, character design, graphic design, animation detail, gameplay mechanics, sound design and the composition of the games tracks are all highly considered. See "13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim" if you haven't already. You haven't? well hell you don't know what you are missing!

Just bought the Blu ray of Neon Genesis Evangelion from Amazon.com. Too many times brought up and now its time to watch it. Sub of course. And no one even try to convince me otherwise. Please. <_<

Im agree about what u say, but I cant still understand why Zero Two had to become a goddamn giant machine, its completely out of logic; I would be more agree if Hiro and Zero Two would have gone together inside the machine or something like that. I think that is the reason that I can't love this work as much I would like.

It's a great show which had great potential had it not relied on the whole 'sex symbolism' and drama trying to make it deep like Eva.

Also they completely botched the ending. If it had gotten a second, more fleshed out season, it would have been much better

HAHA! Actually I can think of two particular reasons; one being that the ship played the role as her wedding dress for her figurative wedding ceremony and the other being that they wanted something brazenly over the top. There are likely other good reasons, but Ill need to get back to you on that! That her mind went to the Apus to become the True Apus, a physical form of Zero Two is pretty wacky! Still they did it with the utmost confidence!

You probably didn't get too far in. The scifi world and character designs, along with the monsters should have hooked you in. If not... well since its such a slow burn to the build up I can't expect you to enjoy it.

It’s 25 eps in what way is that a slow burn? It’s just uninteresting if you aren’t invested in the relationships of anime teens. There isn’t much else to the show. It’s lackluster action, animation, characters and lack of any sakuga just makes me think to myself “There’s dozens of better anime”. Focus was put on romance way more than action or even plot which is ass backwards imo. I guess they just know a certain group of people will see zero 2 call the blank, self-insert MC “darling” and become rabid fans of the series. Ain’t enough for me

So many plot holes I could actually dig a quarry out of it (it was pretty good in the early half though)

Well there are some bits of ass and crotch shots for sure. If I didn’t enjoy the rest Id have been bothered by those scenes too. For what its worth, there are much creepier shows than DitF. Actually DitF is pretty vanilla by comparison.

The show starts off pretty slow no doubt. The dystopian world, the aliens and Zero Two should have worked as the initial hook. If not then yeah, its a wrap.

I guess they just know a certain group of people will see zero 2 call the blank, self-insert MC “darling” and become rabid fans of the series. Ain’t enough for me

Well I was thinking for that person it may have taken too long for the plot and/or characters to hook him. And yes you will largely be uninterested in the show if you aren't into the relationships of anime teens as this is a big focus in the show. Are there better anime like DitF though? Besides Neon Genesis Evangelion, is there another similarly?

Lastly the focus was indeed on the romance, which was a surprising to me. The director himself said he wanted the show to be more introspective than a full blown mech animation. So in this case the relationships between the characters took some precedence.

It's a great show which had great potential had it not relied on the whole 'sex symbolism' and drama trying to make it deep like Eva.

Also they completely botched the ending. If it had gotten a second, more fleshed out season, it would have been much better

I feel like a lot of anime have sexual undertones and/or horny characters. Or is it just the ones I watch? Dam... what do you think? :)

As for the ending; what part exactly stands out to you as the biggest gripe?

A second season is very likely as far as I can tell.

Yeah I'm saying the same. Ichigo forcibly kissing and going head over heels for mc. Nude 02 so many times. Mitsuo and the white haired girl's sex scene (i don't remember her name)

The ending as I said before could have been made different and more fleshed out. Like they needed to show more of the masked gov. and what and how the psychic alien species came/attacked earth, more klaxosaur history and other expositional stuff. MC and 02 drifting in space for a whole year, and becoming a giant waifu robot was kinda bogus and the others left on earth lead their lives just like that...

Nah bruv, there's no 2nd season lol. It already ended with a satisfactory conclusion. I don't think the studios are willing to put their budget into a sequel that is likely to get a lot of hate. It was released in 2016. If it needed a sequel, I'm pretty sure they would have announced it by now

Ooooh some good points yeah! Ichigo and Kokoro were pretty horny.. but in their defense kids can be that way!

"they needed to show more of the masked gov. and what and how the psychic alien species came/attacked earth, more klaxosaur history and other expositional stuff."

More of that would have been a lot better I agree! It came and went pretty fast unfortunately. And I would have liked more scenes with the Klaxosaur Princess and the VIMM.

As for the sequel.... well I mean to be hopeful. But like you said it did end with a proper conclusion and it really has been a while since season 1. I was thinking since the show did garner enough attention and since it ended with "a new story begins" and the VIMM proclaiming that they will be back I figured the showrunners at the very least left the line open for further seasons, but maybe it was just that, leaving the line open in case they felt green lighting season 2 made sense.

In the span of 24 episodes viewers can appreciate a medley of interesting scenarios; child drama, mech battles, aliens, sexual innuendos, beach episodes, dystopian worlds, torture, mad scientist, creepy adults, bedtime story books, and purposeful plot/character revelations.

-Besides the Jian there is a lot of other symbolic things to pick out that relates to the characters and the plot that follows;

For anyone who it may concern;

I am more of a video game buff. I pay particular attention to the narrative parts of video games, character design, graphic design, animation detail, gameplay mechanics, sound design and the composition of the games tracks are all highly considered. See "13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim" if you haven't already. You haven't? well hell you don't know what you are missing!

There are a couple of reasons why it was hyped. It had high production values for example, and prominent producers working together. The idea behind the show was to put together an A team and see what they could come up with together... DitF is what we got for better or worse.

I get it, you love the show, but do you even understand what you're saying?
You're telling a community of a few million people that their opinions are all wrong (the majority of people think this show is meh at best). And for what reason? Because somehow, according to you, the entire community is unable to appreciate the show, and you are one of the gifted few who can see what this show is truly about. Now if you're a normal human being, you should be able to see that just doesn't make any sense, and it doesn't. It's not even like I personally dislike this show and decided to write a comment here telling you you're wrong, quite the opposite actually, I feel like this show gets too much hate.
At some point you just gotta think to yourself 'aight, this show ticked all of the right boxes for me, I liked it, most people thought it was bad but that's perfectly fine' instead of making a post trying to somehow prove everyone wrong (which is basically impossible).

darling in the franxx is quite litrally one of the most boring anime i've seen to date beating rent a girlfriend you need to watch more anime before you make fun of the "typical anime enjoyer" seeing as you only watched 31 anime and nearly all of them are romance a genre which has not changed since the early 2000's

I am arguing that their opinions are baseless and this is an open invitation to either rectify that, prove me wrong, or simply discuss the show in general. So actually this post, while highly incendiary (at least for anime forums users) actually makes a whole lot of sense normal human or otherwise.

So you feel the show gets too much hate huh? EXACTLY why I made this post! That nonsense is unacceptable!

My goal here isn't to argue or bring any vitrol to this community. But to show my love and appreciation for DitF and anime in general. DitF sure is clunky in some areas but I mean to show how overblown the hate is and how beautiful the show is.

Edit: "Nearly all of them romance" thats' a f*cking lie! lmao. I went ahead and checked, got 4 or 5 max and I am including Samurai X. Geez dude exaggerate much?

I've watched more anime's than that. I list the ones I find relevant, completed, or at the very least rate a 7. If its rated below a 7 or I've dropped the show then I don't list them. Also what's wrong with enjoying a good romance? :) Well It seems the genre isn't for you and that's ok. I suppose that would make sense why you would find DitF boring too!

A persons profile can only give you so much context. It's never the full picture. That said, I like your profile as it has plenty of interesting shows I need to check out. I am a big fan of shows with dark undertones, scifi, and stuff from madhouse.

I'm all for starting a friendly discussion or expressing your love for a show, I personally love discussing opinions or reasons why someone likes/dislikes a show, but this post is going to appear very passive-aggressive to a lot of people, hence all of the angry (and childish) responses.

The thread title is definitely a hot take and exaggerated a bit, but there is some truth to it.

I peeped your profile a bit for ammo. And just now I saw you're a One Piece manga enjoyer. Which is fine, I wont judge but I will use it as ammo now xD

@ichihito likes One Piece too. I wont ever understand the love for the show, but I am sure it has unique merits that warrants its popularity.
