Don't overthink it. The reason you *specifically* hear about suicide in Japan so much is because suicide is a "moral panic" in the Japanese media. There are many other places with much higher suicide rates. The real story is that the Japanese media is specifically obsessed with the suicide rate, so a lot of news stories get created about it, and the English language press picks them up. It's always worth actually checking the data yourself before believing any news stories.

It's basically the same there with stories about the suicide rate or otakus being responsible for the low fertility rate as news stories in the USA hyping up how violent crime is skyrocketing when it's actually lower than it's been since the 1950s, or blaming Marylin Manson and video games for school shootings. Japan has junk news the same as we do, and one of the problems is the foreign media just picks up Japan's sensationalist junk news and prints it as if it's fact.

First, suicide rates in Japan just aren't that high by international standards and *American* kill themselves at a faster rate, overall.

Here for a start is a comparative study of youth suicide rates from the year 2000, well after the Japanese media was already suicide-obsessed.

Note that Japan's rate of youth suicide rate was 6.4, which was below the USA rate of 8.0.

Here is the wikipedia article on world suicide rates, updated with W.H.O numbers from 2019. Japan comes in at #49 highest, which isn't very high. United states is 31st highest:

Yeah, so it's just plain bullshit on that front. South Korea for example has a suicide rate of 21 vs Japan's 12. The USA is in the middle: 14.5. Which is, let me point out, higher than it is in Japan. It's basically only a thing because the Japanese media sensationalizes this topic and USA and South Korean media do not.

It's similar for the fertility rate. Japan's fertility rate is low, but so are almost all advanced western nations.

It actually clocks in with a higher fertility rate than Signapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong AND South Korea, which are the economically and culturally comparable nations.
As for Europe it's as high or higher than major nations including Italy, Greece and Spain. So people there have more babies than other advanced East Asian economies, and it wouldn't be out of place compared to Europe either. The more economically developed parts of North America also have fertility rates around the European numbers, and not a whole lot different to Japan. For example, Canada has roughly a ~1.5 birth rate to the Japanese ~1.4.

So, again, it's not actually the birth rate that's the real issue here. Birth rates there are pretty normal compared to other advanced regions. The real story here is actually that the Japanese media is obsessed over the birth rate to a level that other nations seeing similar declines just aren't.
