Yes you need to watch this before fate zero. Fate zero spoils HF route.

Nah, what Zero spoils from HF is not worth it, for starters, he would have to watch UBW first, and that spoils the most important part of Zero, the ending.

Even though I watched Fate 2006, then UBW 2010, and only then Fate Zero... Zero is a great start because it will make your first moments very enjoyable already, whereas a newcomer would feel disappointed starting with FSN 2006.

I felt that I could have enjoyed Fate Zero more, if I was not spoiled on the ending already.

My fanboy opinion whoever, will not contribute to anything, but here it goes, people should start with Fate Stay Night VN first, because it is extremely GOOD, this coming from someone that has watched the anime, was not that eager to play 40 hours before I got to the good stuff, once I started to play, it was just a memorable experience, the existence of Tiger Dojo stuff alone, already gives the VN a lot of extra value, then you also have an amazing OST, great sound effects and full voice acting...

FSN is the kind of VN I though was extremely overrated, and probably did not deserve all that praise, until I played it.

Skip to last paragraph if you just want the order; the rest is just exposition.

Facts: FSN was written as a VN in 2004 made up of three parts aka routes- Fate, UBW, and HF. The airing order for the anime adaption runs from 2006-2021 due adaptational issues causing studio changes.

Zero was written as an LN in 2006 after FSN and made into an anime in 2012. It was written with the expectation you've seen/read the original FSN.

Opinion : Most consider the anime know as Fate (2006) to be optional because Studio Deen tried to adapt the Fate route while including some elements of UBW and HF into it, making it a mess. On top of that, the original Fate route from the VN was considered to be the weakest part of the story. That leaves most recommending UBW (2014) or Zero as the starting point; no one recommends watching HF until you have at least seen UBW. I did watch Zero as my first Fate anime and really enjoyed it, though I would say it is harder to get into for many because it's full of exposition some may find boring. Also, watching UBW right after Zero gave me painful whiplash from the massive change in writing style; UBW is less "dark" or ""mature"" and tonally lighter, which may be easier or harder for a person to start with depending on their tastes. If you were wondering, HF is between Zero and UBW tonally but it completely relies on viewing UBW to understand.

Guide: Using the official viewing order from the Fate/Stay Night reddit page is probably the best way to experience the gradual shift in tone and exposition, revealing of plot and characters etc.

you're not wrong. However you people keep assuming they'll like ubw. I don't know about you but if I were to finish a show I didn't like, I wouldn't continue watching anything else related to the show and god forbid they watch the 2006 anime lol. And we both know Fate zero is the best one

Agreed. This is why I added the opinion that Zero might be a better start for some depending on tastes. Zero and UBW are so different that you might not like the other, though Zero is the one the majority prefers. It's probably better to assume they won't enjoy UBW very much lol. The rest only gets better from there though thankfully.

If someone tried UBW first and really really hated it, they could drop it after six or episodes or so and move onto the superior HF and then Zero I guess. Six episodes is enough for exposition and to tell if you'd like the show. Since UBW and HF start from the same setting it's doable.

Obviously you are missing some things HF builds on from UBW, but all of the anime adaptions of this omit things and if they really like the adaptions they might just end up reading the VN later anyway. This is just a what if scenario. I did know someone who watched UBW and HF that way though lol (watching a handful of eps then skipping to HF). I don't recommend it for obvious reasons but they still ended up being able to appreciate HF.

I'm glad we both think Zero is peak lol.
