I remember first renting Mononoke from my local library, back before I knew anything about Ghibli and all the hype surrounding them. After finishing it, my conclusion was ‘Well, it looked nice, but the story was just nonsensical, and I can’t recall caring about a single character’. Which I would say sums up all their films for me. I feel they get by entirely on their animation. Take that away and they have nothing else going for them frankly.

I also have come to regard Hayao Miyazaki as an arrogant prat, who is allowed to get away with treating his employees (and even own son) like dirt just because of his overblown reputation. And that other Japanese directors and studios get unfairly overlooked because of the massive exposure he got in the west from Disney and the like.

Miyazaki outshines other directors in Japan as well.
