Hmm. I don't know what I expected. A 5 is certainly gracious on this. At times I wasn't sure if I was watching "horror" or the authors barely disguised fetishes.
Jokes aside... I feel like the story has a nice setup. They just don't go anywhere with it. I'm wondering if Ito's original story is actually the same in that regard.
The fish monsters were "frightening" enough. They were zombie-like, moving frantically which added to the creepyness and being fish added a mysterious element (why do millions of fish suddenly come out of the water looking insect-like?). That's about where it stops for me though.
That first dead fish bag flew all the way from Okinawa to Tokyo? Are you serious? Just look at the map. Ridiculous. It also seemed to be able to control it's movement (I guess that's pointing towards to the "gas is alive" thing at the end) which was just silly.
Erika and Aki served absolutely no purpose honestly. Could have cut the entire part out and nothing of value would be lost. Even worse. Why does Aki stay with Erika and the boys instead of following Kaori? That made no sense at all.
The inbetween was kind of good I guess. Generic but fine. Kaori goes back to Tokyo to meet her fiancé (weird setup age-wise but, hey, the movie is 15 years old. Maybe that was common at the time still), meets another person, person has shady reason to help, they fight to get somewhere together, etc. I actually believed here that the 5 was way overblown. Seemed a little generic but generally entertaining.
Then there comes the big reveal. The fish are filled with gas. A bio-weapon researched by the Japanese army during WW2. So far so good. It was useless as a weapon but could be used to fuel a motor. Damn, that explains why the pipes all go into the assholes and mouths. Reasonable. And then they just stop? There is a mechanical device for EACH INFECTED FISH, EACH INFECTED PERSON, EACH INFECTED ANIMAL, ALL DIFFERNT SIZES. No explanation. Just nothing. They just appear out of nowhere? From the sea? Nail themselfs into dead material? WTF. This is so ridiculously stupid. Why not just make them not look human-made. The entire concept could be the same. Make it some weird alien insect-like organism. That's a nice fallback for the bacteria gas on top. These machines make their hosts explode and grab another host. Are they sentient? No, they are machines. Tadashi appears to proof that it's the host that controls the machine. Then why are the corpses straping themself on the machines. While they are supposed to be mostly immobile (revealed as a result to exposure of the bacteria in the video of the professor). Nothing of this makes any fucking sense. And it's not even all-that scary. Just kind of disgusting. Honestly. We need another tag in the entire moving picture industry for this. This isn't horrific. It's just disgusting. Finally they never were too embarrased to show off their anal-plugs. Like... Come on.
Then there is the circus. I don't even know what to say about that. The same as for Erika and Aki applies here. Cut it out. Makes zero difference.
And why is Kaori never turning? Just like Erika, just like Aki, and just like Shirakawa she was cut by one of the fish. I actually replayed the scene because I wanted to make sure if it was a cut from the fish or from the debris around here. And all is pointing towards the former (it's not entirely visible in the scene itself honestly) but she doesn't actually turn.
I really don't know what I was expecting but I'm disappointed anyway. Like many of Ito's other stories this has really cool potential and falls flat almost immediately because it's all about repulsing your viewership with grotesk images and nothing more than that. |
