Whoa, don't be playing the rash generalization card. Some of us came into this show hoping something different would happen, as well as understanding the fact that the doubts some of us had might happen. We just happened to come to the realization that our hopes were dashed.

I don't mean fans like you- everyone is allowed to ship whoever they want. I'm just talking about the people bashing the couple, calling it cliche, and the people who were being total hypocrites about it all. It's not like everyone has to like the couple, it's just been bashed beyond reason lately. So I'm sorry if I offended you.

Eh, I think I called it cliche, because it is cliche. It doesn't help that in they have really rushed a lot of the development needed to get both Ryuuji and Taiga in the proper places to see each other romantically. Cliche doesn't mean good or bad, just overused, and trite.

Oh, oh dear, if that's all of the shows you've watched in your profile, then yeah you haven't seen nearly enough. Really Toradora's been good on the number of cliches in the series thus far becuase they manage to put a certain amount of depth, or comedic twist on it, but if you watch more romance anime, you will definitely begin to see that a lot of the genre likes to skate by only on cliches.

Well, maybe after you're done watching Toradora!, you should give Lovely Complex a shot. I thought they played the whole romance thing a whole lot better in that show.

Also, apology accepted; it was for a sec I thought you just tagged everyone as hypocrites is all.

Yup that's all I've seen haha. I usually just watch Gundam series, so the romance/comedy genre is pretty new to me ^^; Though in some of the other series I've seen aside from Toradora, like Ouran and Fruits Baskets, it seems a lot of people want the main girl to end up with someone aside from the main guy just to make it not cliche, and complain about the main couple being cliche. To me the main guy and the main girl getting together makes sense though as that's usually the couple that has been developed more. I know you can't get free from all cliches, but I wouldn't want a couple to end up together just for the sake of being not cliche, especially when the "cliche" couple makes more sense because of their development. I hope I'm make some sense to you lol.

I've seen Lovely Complex =D and I agree, they defiantly played the romance out a lot better. I kind of wish they developed Ryuuji and Taiga a bit more like that, because Lovely Complex has a lot more romantic development. Though, I still understand and like Ryuuji's and Taiga's development at the same time. I understand your point though.

And I'll try and fix up my post so it doesn't come across that way, so thanks for pointing that out =)

Totally makes sense, except that in the case of Toradora, Ryuuji is the least developed character. Taiga, Maruo, and Ami are the most developed in that order, and Minorin is way at the back after Ryuuji. It was especially jarring for me in, what was it?, episode 17 where it just flipped like a light switch that he liked Taiga, same here in this episode with Tagia concerning Ryuuji. Hopefully they can do a better job from now till they get together, but honestly, I was hoping for a "nobody gets nobody" ending since I knew I couldn't have a Ryuuji/Ami, Minori dead, Taiga no one, yet self confident, Kitamura/some guy (because I think Maruo is quite gay) finale.

Cynically, I see Taiga's crying scene a bit shallow and corny. Am I the only one so cold hearted and still biased against her?? D= Yeah, I agree its the most probable out of the bunch, but the reason Toradora! attracted me was because it seemed un-harem like. I guess I've been disappointed again.

I agree with not the liking the Christmas song. It's not BAD, but I didn't find it catchy nor memorable. Though I thought Taiga was rather pretty, especially in her Christmas attire and with hair DOWN(not a fan of her hair up).

As for the crying scene...I think that's one of the main scenes that bugged me the most. I mean, I was all smiles at the Santa-Bear seen and the happy Taiga, but the sudden realization over her love of Ryuji seemed...awkward. o_0 Almost too sudden.

Yeah Ryuuji himself hasn't been developed that much, but as far as couples go him and Taiga have the most development relationship/closeness wise. But Ryuuji I guess doesn't have his own personal development because most of his development has just been with his relations with other characters. I just get the feeling he's a simple guy, and he's really likable to me in that sense. He may not be developed, but he still has a great personality that we've seen a lot of, so I feel like we still got to know Ryuuji pretty well. I do feel he needs the development of not being so oblivious though. With the random realizations, I can see where you are coming from. It seems as Taiga was more likely to get with Kitarmura, and Ryuuji seemed more likely to get with Minori, it effected Taiga and Ryuuji greatly in a "they can end up with someone else" way. So it kind of makes sense that that was the trigger, but I do still agree with you in it feeling a little rushed. I don't think Ryuuji knows how he feels still though, he seems pretty dense thus why Ami has to constantly bitch at him lol. And I have to say, I wouldn't have minded that ending at all lmao, that would defiantly be my second pick haha.

PS. Wow you have seen A LOT of anime *hides my own embarrassing list haha*

I think that's where we disagree noteDhero. Ryuuji to me is the main character. I find we know a lot about him and what makes him tick and what doesn't make him tick. I also think we know a great deal about his position on things. Sure they haven't dealt with teen angst for him unlike all the others, that's for sure. However, they have developed him. His is definitely far more subtle of the rest. This is keeping in mind that we're seeing him within everyone elses arc. We see his feelings when training Taiga, we see him when he's reacting and interacting with Taiga to get Kitamura's attentions. We see him as basically the frazzled by stander to Ami's feelings/teasing and how that affects Taiga and by default him. We see him trying to get Minorin's attention and suffering through that.

This kind of development goes on and on and on throughout the show. It's most definitely not your blatant development as we saw with Kitamura, Taiga, and Ami. Mainly because they had story arcs. But because Ryuuji was the focus even more so than Taiga (particularly Beach House) as the key inter-actor with the others in their arcs such as Kitamura's Sumire issue, Taiga's various issues, and Ami's decision to stay on----we see his development along side them. He just hasn't had the "ARC" so to speak that is solely about him.

But I do find him highly developed character and nothing near Minorin's development. Since in many if not a lot of scenes Minorin was a minor fixture to none at all and ultimately I find her character paid the price.

I think we understand him, but he hasn't been developed. Only when the incident with Taiga's father has Ryuuji developed and grown as a character. Other than that he has been a quite shallow main character with daddy issues. He's well executed, sure (with the exception of episode 17) and plays out his role in other people's story well, but for a main character, there isn't much of an over all chart for him. We don't get these quirky things with him like Taiga and Santa. He's a very face-value character.

I bolded the statement. You hit the nail in the head. He actually is very developed, in order to be developed enough to be considered to fit so many women, more so Taiga. That would mean that Ryuuji himself is very developed. He is just missing the "arc" we've seen with everyone else. So all in all he is actually a REALLY developed character.

I agree that they're feelings are a bit rushed but I just wanted to say that it was just unrealistic for either of them, Ryuuji or Taiga, to hook up with Minorin or Kitamura, respectively. It's mainly because they (R and T, that is) turned Minorin and Kitamura into objects by having their driving crush. They were never friends with them before they were crushing on them like crazy. It just seemed unfitting and disingenuous for the characters to have or find lasting relationships with Minorin or Kitamura. I don't like the idea of an idealized object being found to be "true love". The fantasy is never the reality and I think they realized that.

Further more, I think the entire progression of the relationship was handled extremely well so all in all although as a stand alone the realization scene was rushed, overall it was realistic. I don't think Ami was a bitch at him, I found Minorin to be more of that kind of character. I found Ami to be a plausible bet for Ryuuji. I really liked the idea of them too since I felt they developed a long standing relationship more so than him and Minorin, and after him and Taiga.

Well I find to understand him is to have some development. For the life of me I still don't "understand" Minorin or the reasoning behind a lot of her actions. I thought his moment at the Beach House had some development and growth. As for the "daddy" thing, see I don't agree with that scenario. It depends on what you think. I can totally ride that him and Taiga are playing house. Where he's the father/daddy figure and Taiga is the mother/mommy figure...actually on another board I'm on the entire relationship is seen as husband/wife 60 years in the future. And they're disputing it in that fashion and I can utterly see why.

I think another thing is that you don't necessarily need an "arc" to get development...however there maybe people got used to the "arc" and expect it, considering how all the characters (Minorin sort of) got that treatment. However, considering he's the main...I find that he's developed a great deal and I bloody well like the guy.

I do agree we don't get too many of the quirky things but that's not in his personality. Remember he's played daddy for his own mother. His mother is more so his child, so he's not one of those "quirky" fun people although I find that with Taiga he gets thrust into that role a great deal. That doesn't mean it's lack of development, that just means...that's not his character.

I totally respect what you're saying and realize where you're coming from. However, I do disagree on the degree of development and how it was done by the writers.

I COMPLETELY agree with this. This is what I've been wanting so say but didn't know how to word properly haha.

Oh and btw- I didn't mean Ami was being a bitch to him, I just meant bitching in the sense that she always has to slap him in the face with reality haha.

I do agree with this a lot actually. He hasn't had a lot of personal development, he does have a personality and we do understand/know him as a character pretty damn well, but Ryuuji hasn't had much change through this anime. I think that's what you mean at least?

I don't think we need an arc for Ryuuji, but for me character development is when a character realizes something about him/herself that changes the way that they interact for the rest of the show. Ryuuji really hasn't had any of those moments. Maybe his being rejected from Minori will be one of those moments. I think we've gotten a great portrait of who Ryuuji is but nothing more has happened, so I have a hard time labeling that development.

I think the main quirky thing about Ryuuji is his relationship with Taiga. What's worse is that no matter how many times Ami tries to point this out to him, he totally ignores her because he is so infatuated with Minori. I think once he starts to see everyone and himself for everything that it is Ryuuji will be a well developed character. I'm just not really trusting the writing at this point to give me what I want I guess.

edit: Totally what I meant Yuki.

Really? I found her actions pretty natural. Taiga is her best friend and Taiga needs Ryuuji more than Minorin does, so she rejected Ryuuji - metaphorically but to the point.

14 pages! FOURTEEN! Seriously....my eyes hurt.

Yes, I read them all.....I seem to be a weird guy after all! :P

Whatever, now its half past midnight and I feel like droping on my keyboard *yawn*.

Thats a real shame because I wanted to write about various things like i.e. why I (as a Minorin fan) entered the 9th level of despair after watching this episode, furthermore would like to give our "massive posting maschine girl" vaberella a big fat hug, feel deeply hurt by noteDhero, want to give fastball611 a pat on the back, agree with Darkreaper70 and kameko14 among others, etc.

Well, maybe I will be in the mood tomorrow....unless you have already written another 14 pages. :P

Oh....maybe one more note regarding Ryuuji before I crawl into my bed, which seems to be 24 kilometers away, and faint on the spot.... and I still have to brush my teeth.... *sigh* .... FTGT just entered the 10th level of despair.

There is one quirky thing about Ryuuji that makes him a bit less shallow:
Mania for cleanliness. He nearly gets an orgasm by cleaning rooms and toilets. The more dirty, the better.

I know, FTGT, I wanted to list that in retort to vaberella, but honestly it is mostly because of his relationship with his mom. He must have taught himself to love it in order for him to do the chores, so I will assume that. However, a good explanation would be awesome.

Actually I think her actions are quite refreshing, the weirdness she portrays toward Ryuuji is the lack of experience with her feelings. Much better than the same old trifecta Louise/Shana/Taiga typical behavior...

Personally, I think there’s a huge difference between “character development” and “development”. This meaning…
Character Development: How the character is executed and thought/mapped out as a whole.
Development (as a character):
noteDhero said:

That said, the character of Ryuuji seems well thought out. If one thinks of Ryuuji as our eyes (as most scenes seen include or are seen by Ryuuji himself), his execution seems timely and appropriate, and since he is our “eyes” so to speak, that would be the role he would fulfill. As the main character, I agree when whomever said that Ryuuji doesn’t need an arc. Despite his infatuation with Minorin, Ryuuji is one of the most developed and mature characters in terms of story, personality, and layout. However, his infatuation with Minorin is covered in her arc, so it seems to me that as a character, Ryuuji is fine non-dramatically changed.

Basically, both noteDhero and vaberella win, because you guys are agruing the same point of view.

I love the way Ryuuji looked in that shirt, but somehow I don't think the slicked back hair suited him.

Anyway, Ryuuji x Taiga seems unavoidable now. I'm really glad, since I was supporting it from the beginning. I wonder what's going to happen to Ami now.

I'd agree with that to an extent. If one asks all long term relationships and strong relationships (on the romantic) who their best friend is they will always say their respective mate. Most will also say they started off as friends first. That's the person they share their darkest secrets with even before their mate---well the good ones anyway. So I think it's not it being pretty hard as much as if it's meant to be romantic. There are some people who remain good friends and have a strong brother/sister bond. However, there are the best friend relationships that heat up into long term romantic affection. On that note, there is nothing to say that Ryuuji and Taiga can't hook up together if their mutual feelings for each other have moved to that realm. It's more like turning on a light switch that kind of love. Rather than a transitional relationship barrier which would be more difficult to surpass I find.

Kainami said:

It's not seeing Ryuuji and Taiga as idealistic but more so realistically. And this is a dream. Ryuuji and Taiga are in love with the idols they've pictured in their minds that have real form in front of them. Their relationship has faced trials and tribulations (of sorts) and they've dealt with things together even though they get into fights with one another and can stop talking to one another. The relationship as a close bond has been solidified more than the others. That being said, they're relationship is more tangible to see as something becoming romantic much more than them with anyone else. If their relationship was on a superficial basis as has been established with Minorin and Ryuuji then I'd have problems. Ryuuji is in love with an ideal and Minori would and could actually spend more time disappointing him than ever being something worth while. So on that note, idealism is out since I don't think they actually are the deal couple. My ideal IS Ryuuji and Ami and/or Kitamura and Sumire. Ryuuji and Taiga are realistic

Nah, I think that's only something Kimi ga Nozomu Eien could pull off.

But why do you hate me Q.Q

Hate? No... that was a misunderstanding.
I respect your opinion and like to read your posts! And of course Im exaggerating, BUT:
When I read the one comment where you outlined your perfect ending.....with..... Minorin.... departed... *Ouch*... The knife still sticks in my heart. T.T

There is one quirky thing about Ryuuji that makes him a bit less shallow:
Mania for cleanliness. He nearly gets an orgasm by cleaning rooms and toilets. The more dirty, the better.

Thats the first time Im quoting myself. What an odd feeling *shiver*. However, since I dont harbor a split personality, I totally agree with me. ^^
To continue this thought:
Maybe his obsession with cleaning also brings him closer to Taiga. Just remember what kind of a mess she is after eating rice. What a feast for "cleaning agent" Ryuuji! :D

And although vaberella seems to be not interested in the reason, why I would like to be nice to her, here is the motivation:

Minorin...and this is another peace to soulelle posts...she definitely came through a bit here. ...
.... Did I understand her in the end...yes I understood that her UFOs and ghosts the unbelievable or fantastical was in reach and could be seen as synonymous to Ryuuji's affection is something she'd rather reject for her friend. So she's become more of a "rational" thinker. To believe in Ryuuji's affections and accept them she would then also be giving into dreams and fantasies and probably always thought those were unattainable until him. However, now she's going to reject them in order to give them to her friend instead. Fine. ....

After reading this.... *sob*... I was just so happy. I think "worldpeace" feels like that.
Welcome to the Minorin faction vaberella. Swifty...hurry....get us some tee!
We take everyone in that does not wish for Minorins death *leer at noteDhero*. ;)

....And no, Minorin isn't exactly 'out of the fight', because they can't just make her a major love interest and center a lot of episode towards her and then just make her say "I don't wanna see UFOs anymore" and make that mean that her and Ryuuji are done. It's definately not over with her. Especially since the next episode shows her being cheerful again, which obviously means she's trying to be happy for Taiga.

THATS THE SPIRIT! ^^

Not to burst your bubble(s) but I don't like Minorin nor will I ever. It has more to do with the failure of the writers to develop her properly on the show than anything else. For me to understand the ghosts it took roughly 6 episodes...that's a long ass time. When I felt it should have been apparent in the initial scene. You can even go back to that ep and you'll see several different speculations on what was going on in that episode and what Minorin was saying. That's a difficulty in conveying the meaning of the character. Of course based on this ep and taking that original ep in consideration it makes sense. However, overall I find her a failure.

In the novel, I actually like her a great deal.

As for "being nice to me"....I'm trying to find out why. Did I say something to you that would make you think I'm not nice to you. I disagreed vehemently by most accounts with soulelle and there were many here to see that but she's my bud and we chat by pm. This goes the same with me and noteDhero. So while others here may take me for some evil being/troll/what not...others here would disagree. I think people need to get over themselves considering I never made myself out to be anyone's enemy...I just disagreed with their position.

Maybe the phrase was misunderstandable. I didnt want to imply that there must be a special reason for me to be nice to you, because you are not nice to me.
In the small and "terrible tired" post before my last post, I stated that I wanted to give you a hug. And in my last post I was referring to that statement and wanted to explain the reason. So, with "being nice to you" I actually meant "being extra nice to you". Not sex..... but close. ^^

*waving aside*
Hurry Swifty..... we need more cookies. She seems to be a bit unstable.
Dont worry vaberella, your love for Anime-Minorin will also arise sooner or later. Im sure of that! :]

Some more thoughts:
As you know, Im reading the novel to the show "Spice and Wolf" recently. And Im also enthused about the insights I get into the characters and their motivation. Compared to that the anime is rather shallow as well.
But when I started to rewatch the show, thanks to my new background knowledge, I knew about the characters thoughts in particular situations, so the show became a lot more understandable and deeper for me. The fault of the directors? Partly yes. But thats the problem with every film or series based on books or novels. Its never as good as the original.
Maybe, and thats just a theory, the directors lost sight of Minorins (and others) development on purpose, in order to save time and motivate people that want to know more, to read the novels.

I didn't just pick it up, I just ditched a slow sub group for a faster one.

Great episode ! The song was great, "Santa" Ryuji and Taiga were so cute... and Taiga chasing after him was so heart-broking.

That scene with the bear and Taiga really warmed my heart.

Finally some good drama, though the most obvious RxT ending seems inevitable now (I still had some hope left for different pairings), which is just too generic. I was hoping for some rare surprise plot like Shuffle! did.

Loved the singing part and the Santa bear part ^^

The ending made my chest ache for some reason... :(

Well I was hoping that there wasn't a generic ending, but we need to see yet, there's 6 episodes left.
