it is too painful to watch them not being together. In this anime, I really sympathize with Taku. Yes, he used Acceleration in the real world for personal gain, but then who doesn't? I mean, take Princess Snow Black for example. And I am using her as an example because some otaku elsewhere told me she's one of the more altruistic characters in the show.
Okay, does she prowl the rooftops of Tokyo at night to fight crime using her enhanced speed? Does she use her points to foil bank robberies? On a regular basis?
Anyway, I digress from what I was going to say.
So Taku used his power for personal gain, but he's hardly a villain. I mean, he didn't go all Marvel/DC and start talking about taking over the world or go around robbing banks.
Bear with me here. I am trying to let you all see Taku as a character with depth and dimensions and feelings.
And yes, he used a backdoor program on Chiyuri in order to complete his mission to kill Black Lotus. And yes, that was totally a Villain thing to do. But he showed remorse at the end. And if you listened to his rant about Chiyuri and Haru, you can tell he's afraid and insecure really. Because Chiyuri, despite going out with him, seemed happier when she's caring for Haru. And shared a short cable link with Haru while she's dating Taku. On her bed. Lying beneath Haru's body.
Then when he asked for forgiveness by coming clean and telling the truth, about Accel World and the backdoor program, he lost Chiyuri. As in, he got friend-zoned.
The way I see it, Taku is trapped. He can't even do the noble sacrifice thing and uninstall Brain Burst. Because where will that leave him? It isn't just about being able to use super speed in real life. The horrible truth of the matter is that if he uninstalls Brain Burst, he will not remember ever using the backdoor program on Chiyu or fighting Haru. But, he will already have been friend-zoned by Chiyu and so he will just suddenly wake up thinking all's well between him and Chiyu and he wouldn't understand why he suddenly got dumped.
Terrible thing to happen to anyone, right?
So what could he do? He can't keep on attacking Haru because he's truly remorseful about attacking his childhood friend. He can't uninstall Brain Burst and back out gracefully because the memory loss will screw up his mind. He can't go on being in the Accel World unless he keeps on working for Black Lotus.
And since Chiyu joined the same legion, he can only watch them flirt with each other. Yes, flirt. How else do you describe the time when Chiyu insisted on using the short cable link with Haru on her bed WHILE Taku was just sitting next to them with a long cable link? And the time Chiyu got mad because she saw Kuruyukihime and Haru leaving the apartment together? How do you think Taku must have felt then? To see the girl he loves get jealous over another man?
Taku deserves Chiyu. Because he trusts her more. Remember, Haru was actually hesitating about letting Chiyu accompany them to the Unlimited Zone. Taku was the one who spoke up for Chiyu.
Taku needs Chiyu more. The fact is, he only has Chiyu to look forward to. Haru has Kuroyukihime already.
In conclusion, I would like to say that even though I am a fan of the harem genre, I don't like it if it truly hurts someone. The girls in IS for example, got angry on numerous occasions, but no one was really hurt because Ichika never picked any one girl to be his gf. Chiyuri, on the other hand, picked Taku, then friend-zoned him and started flirting with Haru. In front of him. That point is when the harem theme stops being funny and turns dark.

Why do I choose the Taku x Chiyu pairing?
Because

YES. YES. YES. YES!!!
I'm sick and tiered of anime's obsession to kill romance for either COMEDY or the mere presence of a HAREM. Why is it so mandatory to have a bloody harem all the time? Haru is a fat, unatractive kid. I get it why Kuroyouki likes him, with her power-fetish and all that, but that's that. The fact that Chiyu would date Taku only too fulfill her ideal of keeping her childhood friends together is downright heartbreaking - that she actually likes the fat protagonist, downright absurd.
I think I speak in the name of all people in the world who had at least once romantic problems: The world doesn't work like that! Stop insulting us by making it seem so easy to succeed in love. Partners don't just fall at your feat for no apparent reason. Maybe in Japan people are so oblivious that they are able to identify with the main character, but everywhere else, I bet people are identifying with the unlucky second characters.
