I open this thread to talk about the truth's gate shown in Fullmetal Alchemist (both 2003 and 2010 versions), it's one of the anime elements which more fascinate me, but I can't completely understand neither its function nor its meaning or what represents, as well as the being who remains outside the door. That's why I would like to know what do you think about this topic.

As far as I know, the only way to reach the door is after trying to resurrect a human, then, once inside, the ability to create alchemy without the transmutation circle is learnt because they managed to see "the truth", on the other hand, they lose a part of the body. The point is that I don't understand what the truth is and what is it referring to.

So, which is your point of view according to this topic?

You should probably make this topic in the FMA:Brotherhood section.

I think anyone could reach the gate as soon as they do human transmutation. So it doesn't matter if they were trying to revive a dead person, or transmuting himself for whatever reasons.

I think what's beyond the gate is basically the knowledge of our Earth, information collected by some force. If that makes any sense.

There's probably some discussion about this topic (probably not on MAL), except I dunno where, but I'm interested as well. :o

I'm not entirely sure what you're exactly asking however I'll give it a shot.

To my knowledge the gate most likely represents their version of the Tree of Life.

If you don't know what the Tree of Life is, it's something used in Cabala.

A picture of it can be found here.

If the gate represents the Tree of Life then it is very likely the meaning and what it represents are very similar.

That's just my opinion of it.

It's the only real place I've seen something similar to the "gate of truth" type tree in modern day occult.

Then again, that's going off the way the Gate of Truth is shown in FMA:Brotherhood.

Also, as said in the Anime Truth is basically "God", "One", "The World", "The Universe", etc.

Here is your tree. Btw I believe the gate says Sephirot on it also and that is the name of your tree.

I think the Truth is symbol of Equivalent Exchange. In order to do human transmutation, The truth(the white guy) will take your body part and your soul will become a kinda of transmutation circle[that's why they can do alchemic without circle]. The reason why Human transmutation doesn't work, its because their souls are already on the other side or inside the Truth.

Truth is basically the "God" of the FMA world, when you do human transmutation you step into his realm, you then see "the truth" which gives you tons of knowledge. Only alchemists at the highest level are able to survive this process. Truth then makes you pay a toll relative to how much you see, and also what Truth deems to be fit for the "crime".

Truth takes the same form as whoever he's talking to, that's why he is an adult when Izumi is at the gate, and short when Ed is there. And after you pay the toll, Truth wears whatever was paid. You may remember the scene in Brotherhood where

The design on the gate seems to be different for each alchemist.

I hope I've answered your question.

Ok, so I went on a brainstorm to figure all the "escaping gluttony stuff" out after my 5th time rewatching the series, and these are the notes I took:

ED JUST DECONSTRUCTED ENVY, HIMSELF, AND LEE AND RECONSTRUCTED THEM ON THE OTHERSIDE OF THE GATE WHICH IS HUMAN TRANSMUTATION
OPENING BOTH GATES, BUT ONLY ED WENT THROUGH THE SECOND ONE BECAUSE HE WAS THE ONE TRANSMUTING AND PAID THE TOLL WITH ENVY'S PHILOSOPHER STONE.
SCAR DECONSTRUCTS, YES BUT EVERYTHING IS STILL THERE JUST NOT TURNED INTO SOMETHING ELSE
Which could only mean that they paid no toll to exit
because gluttony either requires no toll or can be opened with his philosopher's stone
which if the latter is true, that explains why he dies so quickly. because he uses a soul to open his own gate
