Is there any female game characters who never portrayed as sex symbols?

Actually there are some of them but hey don't get much attention they deserved. I'm not surprised to see some FF fanboys disliked Lightning. There are many reasons for that but I believe one of them is she was not as sexy as Tifa from the seventh game.

Gamers love Lara Croft and Bayonetta because not just they kick ass, they also sex symbols of their games as well. Its true both Tomb Raider and Bayonetta are good action games but I want to see some female characters who are not sex symbols.

I'm not surprised femalegamers.com is more interested at Sheva(Resident Evil 5) than Bayonetta.

Nice avatar LOL.

Anyways I quite liked Lightning.
I was happy watching the promotions for FFXIII and seeing Lightning not giving off girly screams when attacked.
She was quite a cool person so I like her character

Princess Peach isn't a sex symbol, and neither is Zelda. But the downside is rather than sex symbols, they are "prizes". So that's another kind of sexism right there.

Oh, the girls from Pokemon. With the exception of Cynthia. She's smoking hot. Def sex symbol.

Yuna and Rikku from FFX2.
No, wait...

The protagonists from The Longest Journey and Dreamfall weren't though. I guess Zoey might have been slightly prettier than necessary though, but otherwise they were both good characters even without showing cleavages and jingles left and right.

Oh, and I do believe any FemShep from Mass Effect apply here too.

There are actually tons of female game characters that aren't sex symbols. (Princess Peach, Kluke, Zola, Xiaomu, Miku, Rei, Mayu, Mio, Reimi, Crimson Viper, Princess Daisy, Asuka, Hikari, Shion, MOMO, Miyuki, etc.) Sorry, I don't have time to list where everyone is from.

The only thing we have to keep in mind, is that some characters don't originally come out as sex related ones, but then due to fans, they do. Cassandra on Soul Calibur was one of these. She started off quite conservative, but as she gained in popularity, her outfits become skimpier and skimpier. :/ There are also a lot of fan artists that enjoy making echhi pictures of decent characters (Peach for example), whether it be for the fun of it, or because of their popularity.

Except for the you know then SEX SCENE in Mass Effect 1 and 2. She may not be depicted as a sex symbol, but she does have sex.

But I think Tali became and unexpected Sex Symbol, I think she was design with the intention of her not becoming one, but the players kinda turned he into one.

Wait Momo and Shion? MOMO is the token Loli, who fights in school girl outfit and Shion has a bathing suit armor.

There's a difference between being a sex symbol, and actually having sex.

Now, how about Alyx Vance from Half Life 2? She's gorgeous, and you really care for her, but not in the "rip-off-clothes-and-fap"-sense.

Or Samus Aran? Sure, some might imagine her stripped down and doing it while blasting flying brains, but most people consider her a badass.

And I doubt Elaine Marley, the companion and wife of Guybrush Threepwood (Monkey Island series) is a very big sex symbol.

Just another example of Half-Life rising above the crappy, adrenaline-fueled need to throw some tits into a game. They also have Portal and Left 4 Dead, which have female characters, but they aren't just there to place on ads and sell games.

Aside from those, it's kind of slim pickings, as you're wandering into non-supporting-character-from-an-overlooked-game territory. I mean, what? Who else is there? The Mom from the Pokemon games? The girl from Psychonauts?

The Boss is generally considered sacred. If you look on danbooru you'll mostly find SFW material which is strange for a female character.

Well, more like adorable moe symbol <3 <3
apart from DEM HIPS, she doesn't come off as much of a sex symbol.
What did strike me odd about ME though is how the Asari are all supposed to be awesome hot stuff that everyone wants a piece of, while, at least to me, they seemed rather meh.

Dude, go to the Boware forums there is like 205+ page thread going on about how awesome Tali is and how everyone was to do naughty things to her >.>

But your right she's not really a sex symbol, more like Digital Goddess. Wouldn't be surprised if she got her own cult.

Heather Mason, from Silent Hill 3.

Faith, from Mirror's Edge.

Hammer, from Fable 2.

Hilde, from Soul Calibur 4 is probably the only female character that actually wears clothing that covers her whole body in that game.

Hmm well there are plenty of girls in games that aren't sex symbols.
The question is, how deep or not can I go. There may be assisting characters that only make an appearance every once in a while. They would not be sex symbols due to the lack of screentime?

Still:

- Emma/Emmy (The last remnant)
- Freya (Final Fantasy IX...)
- Shanoa (Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia)
- Aohime Zaki (Project Justice)
- Zoe Payne (SSX)
- Mint Adnade (Tales of Phantasia)

..to name a few aren't sex symbols...at least not in my book

Also, originally the girls from Touhou aren't sex symbols, it's just that the crazed community/fans turned them into sex symbols with all the artworks and doujins (at least to some degree)

And lastly, I personally think that Shiva from the Final Fantasy series is no sex symbol. Even though she's almost completely naked, save for some decoration and a...frozen chesticle...for some reason I've never seen her as a sex symbol.

already debunked this one. Samus has been a sex symbol since inspection, due to the fact that 100% complete in most of the games is Fanservice.

I wholeheartedly agree.

On a more relevant note, I don't believe that Princess Shroob has ever been portrayed as a sex symbol (probably never will be lol).

Some the females found in the games of the Tales series aren't really popular. Of course, just about anything that exists can be touched, so I'm really not certain of my answer.

Adel can't be in this thread. She's too much of a sex symbol, you know she is.

Again, most, a good portion at least of video game women seem to be characters portrayed any more with sexualized bodies than the male characters, one could practically argue that Solid Snake in that outfit is oodles of fanservice.

It's almost more appropriate to name the characters who have have their bodies called attention to as attractive. In Tales of the Abyss there's loads of boob talk when in talking about the moments and the only time a guys body was played for fun was when mocking Van. And I mean, that's totally upsetting, because Guy's butt was totally begging to be called attention to.

Seiken Densetsu III suffers from this. Her neo-form specials are irritatingly seductive. And Ayla's charm move is a bit, eh.

Dragon Quest games seem to sexualize both characters with moves, though you more often have Jessicas than Angelos.

Elissa Steamer in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skate video games is not portrayed as a sex symbol.

Lucca in Chrono Trigger is portrayed almost exclusively for her geekery. Her body is covered, never drawn attention for any move, and one of her only "sexual" moments is calling Marle cute/attractive.

Etna is obviously portrayed as a sex symbol. I mean, "beauty queen Etna"?

Dixie Kong isn't a human, but of a similar species. And he isn't sexualized in any manner than I know about. She's also a kid, so, yeah.

I don't know of any in game portrayal of May from Guilty Gear as a sex symbol.

Amaterasu in Okami, is, in fact, sexualized. In one scene, a character is able to see through her wolf exterior and calls her a "beautiful woman".

Leo Kliesen from Tekken 6 could be female. And s/he isn't sexualized that I'm aware.

Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII is awesome.

Old avatar and sig retired for now.

Chris Lightfellow from Suikoden III. Sadly not many people played Suikoden III to give her the credit her deserves. She breaks lotsa RPG conventions referent to female characters. She is a heavy melee heavy hitter character. Usually females on RPGs are light speed combo fighters, ranged, or spell caster (or a mix of those). Another popular female archetype is the healer. She could fill this role in this game, but actually any character can fill it competently. She doesn't excel in that. She is a tank fighter all through. She is a knight all way through. She doesn't get boob armor too. Her armor has dignity worth of a knight.

When the game starts, she just got the position of the captain of the knights for her merits as a knight. She is admired by her fellows and feared by her enemies. Still she shows some inexperience in some of her battles, but she takes the responsibility and the burden of her mistakes like a true leader.
