I don't see Gurren Lagann as a Show that sparks/sparked controversy.

Elfenlied, on the other hand, was ALWAYS meant to be shocking. That was what made it popular.
Shock-Value and Edginess just don't age well.

Gurren Laggan "hater" here.

I thought the animation was top tier, the fights were fun, and some of the themes were decent. Otherwise, I kinda disliked it. Not a fan of its humanistic overexageration of the power of the human spirit, but to each they're own.

TTGL's appeal is that it's an extremely well executed genre pastiche. The most unique thing about it is Gainax's animation and the absurdity of the ending, but otherwise it's a fairly standard sendup of Getter Robo.

I've seen a lot of criticism towards the show's treatment of female characters. That seems to be a lot of people's biggest issues.
The scene where teacher Yoko "suits up" to protect her students and we get a close up shot of her chest where she rips her shirt off to reveal her skimpy bikini underneath was meant to be a "hell yeah, she's back" moment, but it made me break out in laughter. That was one of the funniest moments of mood whiplash I've seen in an action anime.

One of the best shows ever created by human hands, not even just Anime. Really a life changing experience, BUT it's not for everyone for several reasons, that's normal. And no, haven't seen people talking bad of this, this is the definition of "peak".

I watched it because someone sold it to me as "a fun Evangelion." i hate the show quite a bit. This was 5 years ago when I watched. I'm open to rewatching those recap movies with an open mind because now i atleast KNOW what it's actually supposed to be like.

I used to adore the show when I was younger. I rewatched it recently and was like "yeah this is alright". I think it's become one of those "sacred cow" type of anime where everyone decided it's "PEAK" and you simply aren't allowed to criticize it and that just rubs some people the wrong way, which is understandable

I have always thought TTGL was bigtime overrated, but it's still like a weak 8 / strong 7, it's just that yall mfers think it's 10/10 greatest of all time. Look at this guy NikoCat, "life changing experience," on god? Calm down, it's not that deep. "What if you, me, and the whole world believed in ourselves hard enough that we built a giant penis robot to fuck the whole universe with?" That's TTGL in one sentence. "You see, its this meta narrative about how you have to struggle to survive, and even though its hard sometimes, struggling is what makes life meaningful, in fact its the survival instinc- yap yap yap"

It's a cool concept! I just thought it was cooler when it was a thought I had while on mushrooms.

people that are looking for serious or realistic story will hate this anyway because you need a lot of suspension of disbelief to enjoy the hype and exaggeration of this anime

its my favorite anime for a long time now and i do not think that will change anytime soon since its a motivational show if you again do suspension of disbelief

this anime makes you feel more (hype) than think more

They believe "If one little thing is flawed, the entire show is trash" which is honestly dumb and not even worth wasting time debating with folks like that
