I tried to read the Kare Kano manga a long time ago since I saw potential in the anime, but it was so chock full of misspellings for like half the text bubbles that I couldn't bring myself to finish it.

Gakuen Alice is the worst I've seen, with entire pages in Chinese.

Rainbow Parakeet is another I couldn't bring myself to read. It was translated from Korean into stilted, unnatural English.

I bought the physical volume where I left off from 20th Century Boys after the fan translation referred to Fukube as "Futabei". There was numerous stuff before that but that was the last straw
Some of you never watched Bakugan Battle Brawlers on TeleToon in 2008 and it shows.

The Best Smell - I liked the series, but at some point, it was very noticeable how bad the translation was and the series was ongoing at that time and I just stopped reading at one point. However, recently there was an official translation released. I do want to check it out at some point, but for some reason it's not listed on this website for me to chronicle (even though the creator's other manhwa series is). 💀

Also, "Tokyo Ghoul" should be an answer, but I still ended up finishing that even though the translation was terrible. I probably shouldn't rate it as low as I did since the translation didn't do it any service...

So far I managed to get through bad fan translation, or found a better one.

@Lucifrost that’s disappointing to hear, but is it in your favorites in spite of that or did you end up reading it in another language?

I never finished Gakuen Alice. I find it tough in Japanese too. It's in my favorites because I liked those parts I was able to read and understand.

I don't remember the name but their were few manga especially isekai ones that had horrible fan translations. I don't think I quit them but they lowered the experience of a manga which was already bad.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

@ryan77999 I think I know what you mean. I was reading the 20th Century Boys translation and I finally was fed up to the point of dropping the manga entirely. There was a translator on there I respected, but the guy who took over after was an obnoxious, disruptive twat. Thank god I remembered the library had the last two perfect volumes available.

God, do you guys remember Wild Fang translations for Baki? They were just so ass, no attempt at proper typesetting or cleaning, just Impact font text slapped onto the panels. Comparing them to other groups, they felt like they had a pretty tenuous grasp both Japanese and English, and they were always beefing with other translation groups for no apparent reason. Thank God we got fan translations from other groups eventually.

I've dabbled in quite a few fan translations over my time, I don't think there's ever been any that have made me full on rage quit. Some better than others sure, but nothing to that extent.

Fan-translation for Kyo Kara Maoh (LN) were so bad that I gave up on fan-translations entirely and started reading all LNs and manga raw, if raw is not available then I won't read it at all.

@Maou_heika can relate, but for the kyo kara maoh manga instead. it was decent in the first volume but for some reason the original scanlator stopped and the scanlating group who took over did a pretty poor job imo

The translation of Overgeared got so bad at a certain point that it put me off the entire genre of Korean virtual reality gaming manhwa as a whole.

Well, I typically don't read fan translations of mangas. So I'm not sure how to answer this question.

Duwang is kind of a fun novelty these days now that we have the Jojo's Colored Adventure Scans, the anime release, and the official Viz manga to actually experience the series as intended. I love how the Colored Adventure scans add in some references to the Duwang scans every now and again for some of the more iconic lines

@LSSJ_Gaming It really was a different world back then. I like how even with that Jojo has always had a fandom that said it was quintessential. They knew their stuff.

I hated the Hajime no Ippo translation around the 700s. No matter how talented George Morikawa is, the translation absolutely shits on his work.

I tried reading Trigun Maximum in 2018 and the translations were the most horribly confusing, nonsensical scans I have ever seen in my entire life. I have no idea how people ever knew what was going on. Every character spoke every sentence like they were having a stroke. I quit before Vash was able to defeat the puppet master (forgot his name).

I've not dropped any manga even though a lot of them had stilted english or just a ton of misspellings. It really sucks and the last one I remember was Rainbow Parakeet last year

I have never dropped a manga, no matter how horrible the translation was. The worst one I have ever seen was the scanlated version of GTO, which looked like this around the earlier parts. The translation was unnatural and the speech bubbles were so poorly edited, the whole thing was disappointing.
But it got a bit better along the way and I absolutely adore GTO even to this day.

I'm kind of at that point with Slam Dunk at the moment. I started reading it in 2009 when Viz had published a few volumes, but decided to wait until a larger chunk had been released. Then I ended up selling the volumes I had, and thought I'd wait for a digital release. Well, seventeen years since they got the license and Viz still haven't published a digital version of the manga. I went over to the scanlations instead, and they're by no means terrible, but there are a lot of grammatical errors and a sense that some of it is just not communicated effectively. It's very distracting and I feel like such a prestigious series deserves better. I'd love to just buy it, but dropping £250 on 31 paperbacks is a bit much at the moment. It's a shame Viz won't make such a long manga available digitally.

It was Pandora Hearts. Some text was unreadable because of chosen font + lower image quality.
