When I think of adventure, I envision exploring various places, encountering people from all walks of life, engaging in different cultures, and forging meaningful connections along the way. In essence, it's about discovering the world and people who inhabit it.

Which brings me to the questions: what exactly is a guild?
Why does membership in a guild define someone as an adventurer?
Why has being an adventurer become the job of monster extermination?

For me, the essence of adventure lies in exploration. In that regard, One Piece and Made in Abyss stand as exemplary representations of true adventure.

What exactly is a guild? Think of guilds as the ultimate VIP clubs for adventurers. They're the go-to spots for those looking to flex their skills, take on quests, and mingle with others. It’s where all the action and connections happen. They’re organizations where people with similar goals and skills come together to support each other, take on quests, and share resources and informations. Think of them as the adventurer’s hub, where you can find work, comrades , and lots of drama.

Why does membership in a guild define someone as an adventurer?

Joining a guild is like getting your adventurer’s badge, an official stamp of approval that says, “Yep, you’re the real deal.” Guilds provide structure, legitimacy, and a network of opportunities that define and elevate an adventurer’s status. Plus, it’s hard to be a lone wolf when the guilds have all the best quests!

Why has being an adventurer become the job of monster extermination? In the world of fantasy anime, monsters are the bread and butter of adventure. They’re the lurking threats, the challenges heroes must face and let’s face it, watching epic monster battles is what keeps us on the edge of our seats. No one’s here for the mundane stuff.

Well it is simply going to certain place which is not your regular place or not close to you.

1. -> What exactly is a guild, as it is inspired from Medieval European guilds as a lot of stuff you see in fantasy/isekai anime than I shall answer what was that in reality:

Guild derives from a word of Saxons gilden which meant to pay. It could also being from Germanic word Gilde which means I think it would be Association. As trading was one of the most popular ways of exchanging goods and acquiring new stuff, aswell as gathering currency since the very early times it led in Antiquity [Akkad and Roman collegium] and later in Medieval times to the guilds known like in anime. Traders were usually afraid of encountering bandits or culture which might force you to trade with them/or simply steal all you goods which led into creation of trade unions which were meant for protection. [There were also other guilds, such as craftsman, frith, religious etc.] To be a member of such guild you would need to be already a merchant and live in the town where the guild is located.

2. -> To be an adventurer is simply to travel to somewhere else, which is what I liked through my studies as it means to "go vikingr" as vikings are always connected to raiding, but many of them actually travelled without raiding and travelled for trading, that's for me is an adventurer.

3. -> In a fictional world which is mixed with existence of beasts and other dangerous entities it would simply lead into mercenary/adventurer guilds which would need not only to work as protection for trading routes, but also routes in which a person would normally travel or to protect the nearby villages, service villages, craftsmen settlement and other kinds bonded villages aswell as for the main city. Which is why it would require an adventurer to be the one going through such stuff as retainers/retinue, guardsmen, warriors would have other jobs to do connected to stuff of our real history such as war conflict, protection of aristocrats/lords and strategic places, aswell to control the safety of cities/towns/villages.

A guild, I believe, is a MMORPG mechanic, which have no business appearing in anime, but nevertheless appear in bad stories written by people who spend too much attention to things like MMORPG and don't have the necessary knowledge and experience of the real world to write good stories. They do not really relate much to historical guilds.

Adventurer is another word for hero and a hero's job is to exterminate monsters.

I agree with you 100% on true adventure. This is why I write and illustrate on characters going on exploring places.

Adventure Guilds are entirely a BS thing made by anime. A guild is like a trade union. Going on adventures is not a trade.

It's really just insulting the way these medieval societies, where adults are basically work like slaves to keep the place running, while youngins run around on adventures with piles of gold coins.
No, none of those people in the village would pay that much money to some shady organization in their town to "kill monsters". Especially when you see what the actual monsters are in most of these places...

otherwise it's them joining to "explore dungeons" which is literally Hanna Barbara levels of lazy animation, it's easy to render featureless caves so score a win for the cheap-ass studio there, and the kids boink around looking for treasures- like if there was a cave anywhere near a medieval town, I absolutely guarantee you SOMEONE would have found it and plundered it by now. They aren't gonna PAY some 10 year old to go fuck around in there and have the gold. No, fuck off brat. It's just typical anime BS and lazy storytelling.
