| That is exactly why I still collect and play JRPGs. To be honest, the story isn't anything groundbreaking – it's often poor and woven with the most predictable tropes. What keeps me engaged is the gameplay. If the battle system works well and is enjoyable to master, that's all that matters. Good characters certainly don't hurt either. So yes, gameplay takes precedence over story for me. I'm rarely convinced by a great storyline in most games—and I play a lot. Gameplay/Fun > Story sq |

Gameplay/Fun > Story See, I feel like there's a clear distinction between a simple or non-focus story a-la FF1/FF3 or DQ games, Lufia, Phantasy Star, etc etc. Modern examples would be the nino kuni games or the monster hunter stories. JRPGs with a focus on story that do not deliver a good story are the worse, no matter how good the gameplay might be. Many atlus JRPGs do fall on this side where perhaps the gameplay is good but you spend SO much time in dialogue for a story that is so boring, it brings the game down for me. So yes. Bad story =! story that is purposely not impressive, but a story that wastes your time, and in that case, ehhhh, gameplay does not carry it. retro anime aesthetics. |
