Shinji and three Greek words for love.

After reading the text below, which love and from whom, is the most important for Shinji to receive?

When it comes to Shinji and who is the best person to ship him with there sure is a somewhat imbalanced division in choice based on different reasons not so much related to each other but with some regard for is well being and how the characters relationship was through out the series.

In all seriousness though we can surely all agree that him getting genuine love, romantic or not would improve his psychological state. That is why here in this poll I am asking a similar question to the one of who Shinji is best with but in a different way based on the definitions I will lay down below.

As you should be aware, NGE and its finale movie EoE are Christian works of fiction by method of biblical allegory. This means that more than one story is being told at a time, in this case its own story at face value and certain books of the Bible with mostly an emphasis on Revalation (Greek: Αποκαλυψις. Apokalypsis) but also some of Genesis (Greek: Γενεσις), Gospels (Greek singular: Ευαγγελιον. Euangelion), and little references to some of the others.

What does one mean when they say “book(s) of the Bible”?

It may have sounded off topic but it is relevant to the poll in that as English speakers, we acknowledge that there are different kinds of love but only one word is used to define all. In the Greek language however there are six which I will be quickly be defining the ones that are in context with the Bible and that are in the poll.

• Storge Στοργη– Parent and Child
• Philia Φιλια– Close friends and sibling like
• Eros Ερως– Romantic and Sexual.

Before making your selection please read this list below.

I have not included Asuka with philia because I sensed rather roommates that didn’t like each other in someways that they probably would rather live separately once the issues came fourth.
Despite the possibility and how some might see it, I have not made Misato’s storge interchangeable with philia
With Misato and Rei having two kinds of love, both have multiple choice but regardless it should be thought mostly of a combined total. Their Eros Only is also something I do not expect for anyone to choose but chose to include for the sake of seeing
Except for Rei – Eros Only, all other choices which have Philia are further divided with Rei as older sister because her official birthday is March 30, 2001 and Shinji’s being June 6, 2001 and Rei as younger sister because...
Regarding eros with Rei. For this poll disregard the fact that she is a...

Regarding eros with Misato disregard that she is an older woman and regardless of Japanese legality.

Also.

There is Agape Αγαπη – Regard as human. But I did not include it because it wouldn’t seem to have much effect (though I would say it is what Ritsuko could have had toward him. Relevant but for another discussion).
Touji and Kensuke were not included with philia because of their NERV status.
Kaworu with eros was not included because throughout the series, Shinji is shown clearly to be heterosexual and this is not the place I want jokes.

I think deep and true parental love is what he really needed, that's why I chose Yui but parental love coming from Misato could also act as a replacement. I think romantic love wouldn't work that great for him compared to parental love, at least not from Misato and definitely not from Asuka.

Really enjoyed reading your writeup!

As the other comment said, Shinji seriously needs ANY parental figure that loves him. I'd say Rei is definitely the closest thing he has to a source of Storge in the series.

Maybe I'm underselling the depth of their relationship since it's been a while since I watched NGE, but Shinji likely wants Eros from Misato because he's a teenage boy 😂

Although your reasons for ruling out Asuka/Philia are valid, they do fight like siblings at times, even if that would make some later events...concerning.

I’ve only seen NGE, and I watched it a long time ago. From what I remember, I think Shinji needs Rei the most. I think balanced as older sister. Although I agree with the other comments that parental love is important for him as well.

I’ll rethink after watching the rest, which this post has inspired me to do.

It's literally what Inio Asano does with his manga, take for example Oyasumi Punpun, there's three main characters (Aiko, Punpun, Sachi - id, ego, superego) and they're parts of his personality at that time of his life. Of course, unlike Evangelion it doesn't work at all there because that's it, no message, just some cynical and too on your face nihilistic rambling that goes nowhere, a therapy for himself, not for us.
