Why did 4Kids One Piece FAIL while Funimation's Dragon Ball Z succeeded?

It’s stange that the 4kids one piece dub failed in the US because it was hailed as one of the worst English dubs in history, yet the Dragon Ball Z dub was also bad, but it was a huge success in the US in the 90s and early 2000s. What actually made Funimation’s old dub of DBZ work while 4kids one piece flopped and didn’t work?

Maybe DBZ is a better show than One Piece, therefore ANYBODY making it accessible to the West would succeed!?

And because DBZ feels more Japanese, thus making it interesting, while the West already has pirates.

I think the main issue is just that One Piece is a harder show to edit down for a kids TV spot than Dragon Ball was.

Dragon Ball's censorship was an overall easier job because there weren't as many edits that needed to be made to the footage itself. If you look at the visual edits, especially from the Saban era of edits, it was mostly adding flashes during certain punches, removing dead bodies, limiting the amount of blood on screen at any given time, and obstructing full frontal nudity with other objects. One FUNimation started doing everything in house, Cartoon Network was a lot less strict since it was one cable and not on syndicated TV, so stuff like flashes weren't needed anymore, and more visible blood could be shown, but not any real moving gushes or anything. The edits weren't all too visually intrusive.

Meanwhile One Piece was HEAVILY edited with a lot of really poor redraws. It was really easy to tell just by looking at the show that something was wrong with the edits 4Kids made, and I think the most egregious example would have to be how they handled Laboon. Laboon was gutted entirely and haphazardly replaced with an iceberg and the cuts were EXTREMELY jarring. It also really did not help with how 4Kids would just flat out skip important arcs such as Reverse Mountain and Little Garden leading to the story being incomplete. Saban did cut down some early episodes of DBZ, but they never actively skipped over plot important content. 4Kids One Piece was just so painful and intrusive with its edits, it really makes early DBZ look like a great English dub by comparison
