OK, this is easily the best of the new shows so far this season. Really good animation, good directing, funny, well told story. Everything was head and shoulders above the other stuff that's come out so far.

Episode 1

Pretty amusing start there as it's all about a small fry villain who is tired of being Footsoldier D, and it turns out that these alien invaders were defeated a long time ago and the fight that happens every Sunday is just a stage show in which the villains are pretty much show biz slaves to the Keeper Rangers. And thus, D decides to take matters into his own hands and it's a good thing he has just the ability to try and change things, and I'm curious to see how he plans to do it.

Episode 2

And now, D begins his rebellion to put an end to being sideshow fodder for entertainment. D becomes buddies with Yumeko, who wants to put an end to this sideshow as well for her own reasons. D has quite a lot to learn there seeing that he failed to keep Yumeko unaware, all while he got on the red ranger's bad side. And then F goes down as the next sacrificial pawn. D takes on Hibiki's appearance, and he's going to have to learn the ways of the Keepers if he wants to keep this charade going. Amusing stuff once again going to show that D is trying to change everything.

I didn't expect D to die in episode 3....unless he had some trick set up, but it kind of indicated another fighter would be taking over

Episode 3

D's plan was found out by Sukurama, but while he wants to stop this charade, he wants humans and monsters to co-exist unlike with D who wants to take revenge. While D could fool most other soldiers, he couldn't fool Tokita as he saw right through that disguise. As it turns out, that was a fake, and Suzukiri stole the real one. Pretty messed up things have become here as now D is dead and it all comes down to what Suzukiri will do next.

Episode 4

How Sakurama's desire for co-existence came about is explained as it came from his parents who had a strong sense of justice that they got from their religious experience. But everything changed when his family was killed, but he survived and was rescued by the Blue Keeper, who is not the same person as the Blue Keeper of today. And in the end, D survived that attack and he established a close relationship with Sakurama seeing that while they have different objectives, both of them involve reforming the Dragon Keepers. In the meantime, the Red Keeper is on edge now that he lost his Divine Artifact that Suzukiri stole. Pretty slow episode here, but one that establishes Sakurama's character seeing that he's somebody who is on-board with what D is trying to do.

So, was the god who killed his parents one of the monster's leaders?

One would presume the second in command of the red ranger has seen the red ranger beat people to death before, seems odd he would have provoked him.

For a moment, I was quite surprised and impressed when D blew up because I thought that they pulled a twist making him a protag only for 3 episodes to be replaced by the red-haired dude. But turns out, I gave it too much credit :P

With the amount of new characters they introduced, I don't think this is gonna be just 12 episodes. And that's fine by me since there's only a few unique Anime shows nowadays.

Superhero-Satire shows has been good to me, so far; The Boys, Invincible, and this.

This show is getting a second season that was announced today.

So with the way things have gone here, D has infiltrated the Keepers and takes the cadet exam as Hibiki, and it turns out he's not the first person to infiltrate them and XX was already there. And after a lot of fighting, it turns out that one of the villains, Peltrola, was there all along. And thus, it ends with a confrontation against the Blue Keeper.

Episode 12 (Season 1 Finale)

D and Blue Keeper settle the score, but in the end it was Peltrola who kills the Blue Keeper with a blindside shot while he was engaged in battle with D, and while h e's out to get revenge against the Keepers, this is not the way he wanted to get back at them. With the Blue Keeper down for the count, as well as two other cadets being killed in the process, the Keepers have been thrown into chaos and while it looks like the staged shows are coming to an end, not in the way D was hoping for. Lots of bad vibes here with the way things ended as all of the sudden the villains have arisen again, and not in the way D was hoping it would go.

Final Thoughts

This show started off being a great, alternative take on the sentai genre. But a great concept can only get it so far, and while it does a great job with the drama, action, and characterizations, the story writing slumped along the way as I felt that the whole cadet exam portion dragged its feet. Nevertheless, it had its moments and hopefully there will be more of that in its second season in comparison, but in the meantime it had a story it needed to established, and it certainly could have been done better.

Grade: B- (7/10)

Visually impressive & an interesting enough concept. OP & ED are honorable mentions for the season. But execution is a mess. It’s obsession with edginess (ultra-violence & betrayal) reminds me of Platinun End, which is not a good thing. But it also wants to be aspirational & give feelz of camaraderie. Oh, and also be satirical/funny. Just didn’t work for me on any level except audio/visual. My Biggest Disappointment of the Spring 2024 season & not planning to watch season 2.

yeah, the motivations seem to be all over the place. Fighter D is all about defeating the rangers, but then when one dies, he seems upset about it, then 5 minutes later in the episode he's saying "1 down, 4 more to go". I would have at least liked for something to be explained a little better by the end of the first season.

I gave this one a 7/10 just for he potential.
