I'm completely wrong perhaps because not even I am fully convinced but what if the Tokio timeline is in the past somehow instead of being at same time as Maru's journey and that's the reason as why Maru got his ability

From my understanding that is a currently running theory and it would kinda make sense my personal flaw with the facility arc being in the past is that in one of the first episodes (can't recall which one) one of the kids asked what is outside the walls and got a response something along the line of "Horrible Monsters" (not sure if thats how they said it i don't remember it exactly) so either its mean to symbolise that humanity is monsters or they are talking about Man Eaters but they were not an issue until the disaster (so they either did not exist yet or were just not showing them self) and Maru was already alive sometime around the disaster. Of course i could be totaly wrong if im and someone that remembers it better wants to correct me the floor is yours!

Not the first time I’ve heard this theory and it actually makes sense. I’m planning to pick up the manga very soon cuz mother of God I just would love to find out how things continue to unfold. It’s sooo good
