I'm currently reading "Kiss and White Lily for My Dearest Girl" and it's reminding me of how I wasn't that into "Adachi to Shimamura." I don't know how else to describe it other than the characters feel too much like anime characters and maybe I also want something that primarily focuses on the relationship between two characters, but that's not a requirement.
I really want to get more into GL mangas, but it's always a lackluster attempt and that ends up not happening. Although as a result of putting together series that would serve as examples for what I want, I realize that it actually hasn't been as mixed of a bag as I thought and I have come across a number of series that I've liked.
For the most part, I've gravitated toward series that are more on the serious side - "Yume no Hashibashi," "Double House," "Kakeochi Girl," and "How Do We Relationship?" - all of which are coincidentally about women and not girls who are still in high school, but even then I enjoyed "Bloom Into You" and "Yoru to Umi" which are also on the serious side but are about high schoolers, so it would be great to get recommendations that treats its characters in a more realistic manner and are poking at something more raw & emotional regardless of their age. I know that "My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness" is a must read in this regards, but I have yet to get around to it, and "Haru to Midori" also looks promising but I'm not particularly wanting an age gap/teacher and student relationship at the moment, so I'd also prefer a series where the main couple are around the same age.
Even with all that said, I wouldn't mind a more lighthearted GL series either. I really enjoyed "Accept My Fist of Love" for example and that's basically a romantic comedy, so I'm open to that as long as it's got good characters with actual chemistry.
And it doesn't need to be a manga series either. I've also enjoyed GL manwhas such as "Dallaeya" and manhuas that include "She Is Still Cute Today" for example, "Their Story" is cute, and "Beloved" has great art although I need to get around to finishing it one of these days. I previously mentioned "Yoru to Umi" and that has beautiful artwork, too. I am very judgmental when it comes to art. That's a big factor into why I haven't been able to get into GL because it seems that the cutesy type of art style that I'm not that into is rampant in this genre, but I'll withhold my judgement as long as the story is good. I know I could be missing out on something because I'm judging the book by its cover.
TL;DR: I want some GL recommendations where the characters aren't walking anime tropes and who actually get some character development. If it's about a cast of characters (as opposed to focusing on a couple) then the previous statement applies to everyone. If two characters are going to be romantically involved, I want them to be close in age. I would prefer a more realistic/serious story with elements of drama, but am opened to romantic comedies. The series can be a manhua or manhwa as well. And I'm not the biggest fan of moe-looking characters, but I'm willing to check out something if it's good. You can browse through/click the links of some of the series that I mentioned above to get an idea of what I've enjoyed. |
