I'm rewatching the live action films with my dad, when I was telling him some of the background of the series I told him about Kenshin being voiced by a girl because it's always something that's stood out to me.

Personally, I'll be honest, I've hated this ever since I heard it. I don't think it fits him at all. But that's besides the point, I have never known why they went with this casting choice and I always wanted to know.

Ironically he thought the actor for Kenshin was a girl in the movie too at first haha but I'm sure that's just him not being used to seeing asian faces

I know, I know, I don't want to seem too ignorant about it but while obviously it's normal for women to voice young boys in anime it's not as common for them voicing adult or near adult men. Surely it was a little bit strange, even the idea that they would be accepting female auditions for this adult character must've just been an idea that just popped up at some point, I know in DBZ the reason is because she voiced Goku when he was a kid but this isn't exactly the same case

I wondered if there was ever any official things stated regarding it, or even if not I guess why do you think it was chosen?

Ftr, I'm not against this. For example, I thought the Love interest in Ashita no Nadja was voiced very well and was super convincing despite being a woman, and I was actually shocked when I saw that Yun in Akatsuki no Yona was voiced by a girl I had no idea while watching.

that's a common thing in shonens. Naruto and Goku are also voiced by women. It's to give the MCs voice a softer tone to match their innocence.

Well , Kenshin is described as a very effeminate man , so it could be one of the reasons.
But yeah , a woman voicing a man is not rare at all in Shounens anyway.

Man you guys don't get this it's common obviously for younger characters like Naruto to have female voice actors, they're adolescent/early-mid teens and it doesn't risk a guy from their age group's voice changing or an adult man not fitting the younger character because of his lower voice. The reason they keep the same voice as they've grown in their respective shows like Goku or Naruto is out of respect for the actresses playing them when the characters were younger. Because at that point they've become the character, Goku's actress was playing him as a kid and she just aged up with him without being replaced same with Naruto. This character is 28, he is a grown ass man from the very start of the series, he is not growing from adolescence like they do or at an age where it would be normal for him to be voiced by a woman.

It's not like the voice actress for him is very cutesy or anything, have you watched the show? One of the reasons that news was so shocking is because there is absolutely zero indication of any of the mangaka's "attractions" in this series. It is a show which is pretty tame on any fanservice at all at that and the romance in it is fairly pure and normal and well developed. Most of the characters are adults as well. It certainly was not a series created liked that despite the horrible things the mangaka did.

It is pretty commong that men in Anime are voiced by females as well.
Even more so with younger cbaracters like Viel Phantomhive, probably for a higher voice to achieve.

It creates the illusion of youth and innocence; while I do love the live action movies, I do agree that Takeru Satoh doesn’t really capture that same carefree attitude (although I do think he looks androgynous enough to MAYBE seem like a woman). Conversely, whereas I think the original Kenshin actor doesn’t entirely fit the more tragic story and serious tone of Trust and Betrayal (although it still works), Satoh seems like the perfect fit for the remake (Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning), so in the end I do love both castings.

The super secret reason is: she or her agent sent in a demo and it sounded great so they went with it. There's nothing else to it.

But as has been said it's not abnormal for seiyuu to voice different genders to their own so her having sent an application in even for a 'grown man' isn't weird.

the fact that basically no-one realises until they stumble into the bio or someone tells them should be proof enough that it was the correct choice.

I just noticed it since I was watching the dub, and glad I watched dubbed it seems very weird in Japanese, the girly voice doesn't suit him at all.

Actually , it does , and a lot. x)
In the Manga , he's often described as a very feminine man , and in the prototype he's given a ribbon for his ponytail because of it.

I get what you are saying even in the dubbed version, his voice  has a higher pitch but the Japanese one  sounds like he is a gal not a man, which makes it weird for me to watch.

I agree, it perfectly encapsulates his innocence and his life of atonement in Meiji. It also makes the new reader/watcher confused and bewildered when they encounter Kenshin, which is explicitly referenced in the series when Kenshin is mistaken for the big guy in the first chapter/episode.

I needed around 20 episodes to get used to her voice.
I don't think it suits him well, even though you get used to it eventually.

(I like Luffy and Naruto voices, but I hate Goku voice, so I'm not in favor nor against women dubbing men)
