What do I do?
(A quick-start guide for the
2020 Anime Watching Challenge)
Hello neighbors! Have you read the Rules and How to Participate posts, but still need a little help signing up for the 2020 Anime Watching Challenge? Here's a quick-start guide to get you going in the right direction.
First,
Find the sign-up code in the Bronze Medalist post in the sign-up thread. Click the button labelled "Show Sign Up Code for Bronze Medalist", and copy everything inside the box that appears:
Then,
Scroll all the way up and click "Post New Reply" in the top left corner of that page.
On the new page, click inside the large empty box and paste the code that you copied. Then just click submit. It's okay, you don't have to edit anything yet:
Next,
MAL will redirect you to your fresh new post. Look at your post number in the top-right corner of your post, remember it, and then click Edit in the bottom-right corner of your post:
Finally,
Fill out your information in the sign-up form:
Initial Post Number:
That post number you remembered from just a second ago. Don't change this number, even if your actual post number changes sometime in the future.
๐ท Challenge Start Date:
Whatever date you started watching the first anime you use for the challenge.
๐ถ Challenge Finish Date:
Eventually, you will put here the date you finished the final anime for the entire challenge.
Note: Use the provided format for both the Start and Finish Date; e.g. September 18, 2020. It makes inspection go much more quickly.
๐ฃ Link to your completed anime list and ๐ฃ Link to your Anime+:
In each of these links, replace YOUR_USERNAME with... your username.
๐ฉ Completed Anime (at sign-up):
Check your profile to find the current number of anime you've Completed.
๐ฉ Time Zone:
Your time zone; preferably the one where you spend the most time watching anime.
๐บ Difficulty:
Whatever difficulty you are attempting. You can always change this later if you decide to raise/lower the level you're going for.
๐ป Restriction:
If you're attempting to complete the challenge using an approved restriction, list it here; otherwise, just put N/A. Read the How to Participate post in the sign-up thread for the list of approved restrictions.
๐ฅ Anime in Forum Set:
If the characters in your forum avatar and signature are from an anime, list those anime here. For example, I would list Uchuu Kyoudai (from my avatar) and Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon (my signature). If you don't have a forum avatar or a signature, or no anime characters appear in them, just put N/A. If you want to upload an edgy forum avatar or make a beautifully crafted signature, you can do both in your MAL Forum Settings here.
Now...
Go watch some dang anime! Remember, any anime you started watching in 2020 can be used for this challenge, regardless of when you posted your sign-up form. Did you binge-watch Yuru Campโณ on January 5, but didn't sign up for the challenge until January 11? You can still use it!
Some tips:
You can edit your post as many times as you want; daily, weekly, after you finish a section, whenever. In fact, it's expected and pretty much required that you'll edit your post several times over the course of the challenge, since you'll be filling in challenge items with anime as you watch them.
If you're attempting a difficulty higher than Bronze, go to the Silver Medalist post in the sign-up thread, copy the entire Silver Medalist code like you did for bronze, and paste it below your bronze section just after the [/spโoiler][/quote] tags. Repeat for as many tiers as you need. You code will look like this between sections:
You can change the colors to your liking, but make sure they're not painful to look at, and they're easily visible on both a white background and a dark background.
Pleasedonotchangetheformatofthechallengeitemlist. This includes the arrangement of the quote, list, and spoiler tags, the spacing between the challenge items, the provided date formats (e.g. Aug 08), and how each individual item is formatted.
Note:
This guide is meant to help you set up your post. It is NOT a substitute for reading the Rules and How to Participate posts. Most questions can be answered by reading them. Additional questions can be asked in this discussion thread, or you can join our official Discord server. There are usually some AWC staff there who can help.

Ready?...
Go watch some dang anime! Remember, any anime you started watching in 2021 can be used for this challenge, regardless of when you posted your sign-up form. Did you binge-watch Yuru Campโณ on January 15, but didn't sign up for the challenge until April? You can still use it!
Now what?
So you've got your post all set up, and you've chosen Card #6: Rubik's Rubric (you're welcome). Now let's say you just finished watching Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Hey, Joseph Joestar is British; that show fits item #105! You should add it to your form!
Find your post and click Edit like you did before. Now, scroll down through your code until you find item #105. It looks like this:
[*][color=SLATEGRAY][Started: DATE] [Finished: DATE][/color] (105) Watch an anime with a human main character that is not Japanese
[url=http://myanimelist.net/anime/0000]ANIME_TITLE[/url]
[color=LIGHTSEAGREEN][Main Character: | Nationality: ][/color]
There are a few things you need to fill in for each item you complete:
Started:
The date you started watching the anime. Please format your date as MMM dd (i.e. Apr 17)
Finished:
The date you finished watching the anime.
Anime:
In the code, simply replace 0000 with the ID number of the anime you watched, and replace ANIME_TITLE with the main title of the anime as it's listed on the MAL entry. Please copy and paste the main title directly from the anime's MAL entry; don't use the secondary title (if it has one), and don't use any alternate titles. You can see where to find the ID number and main title in this screenshot:
Extra information:
Many items will require you to list specific information related to the item you completed. For example, item #105 provides you a space to list the character and nationality. This is also the place where you will provide links to screenshots you've taken, if they are necessary to prove an item's validity.
Some items do not have brackets provided, but you can add them if you feel you need to provide extra information or screenshots for questionable items.
Once you've filled out the item, your code should look like this:
[*][color=SLATEGRAY][Started: Aug 28] [Finished: Sep 3][/color] (105) Watch an anime with a human main character that is not Japanese
[url=http://myanimelist.net/anime/14719]JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken (TV)[/url]
[color=LIGHTSEAGREEN][Main Character: Joseph Joestar | Nationality: British][/color]
Each time you make an edit to your post, make sure you click Submit to save your changes.
Once you feel comfortable editing your code, feel free to change the provided colors to your liking:
[*][color=#00CED1][Started: Aug 28] [Finished: Sep 3][/color] (105) Watch an anime with a human main character that is not Japanese
[url=http://myanimelist.net/anime/14719][color=#FF1493][b]JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken (TV)[/b][/color][/url]
[color=#FFD700][Main Character: Joseph Joestar | Nationality: British][/color]
NOTE: Use colors that are easily viewable on both light and dark backgrounds. Inspecting your form is much easier when we don't need to squint to read it.
Some tips:
You can edit your post as many times as you want; daily, weekly, hourly, whenever. In fact, it's expected and pretty much required that you'll edit your post several times over the course of the challenge, since you'll be filling in challenge items with anime as you watch them.
Again, you can change the colors to your liking, but make sure they're not painful to look at, and they're easily visible on both a white background and a dark background.
Depending on what level you're attempting, you can swap out middle square items for any unused challenge item that is not already on your card.
For example, if you're using card #6, you could swap out item #114 and replace it with item #33.
Please do not change the format of the challenge item list. This includes the arrangement of the quote, list, and spoiler tags, the spacing between the challenge items, the provided date formats (e.g. Aug 08), and how each individual item is formatted.
