Elfen Lied have some gore scene if you like that.
Dunno why Kabaneri & Owari no Seraph are in the poll tho , they are clearly not horrific.

Edit : I see that you have Devilman : Crybaby in your plan to watch list , so just go for it.

Elfen Lied is a risk if you want to have a good time with horror show. Objectively, Shiki is the safest choice: it’s not too light as Kabaneri or too hard to swallow as Shinsekai Yori for a horror film.

Probably this order:

Shiki > Kabaneri > Elfen Lied > Shinsekai > Seraph

It’s in old > new > old > new order, old ones have this heavy vibe around it compared to modern ones so it’s best to alternate.

Seraph is bland among this set but it will mark in your memory probably if you throw an intense or soft-themed supernatural/horror show before watching it.

Elfen lied is not horror but more of a thriller. I either haven't seen the others or i just liked Elfen lied more.

Shikki however is horror, but i didn't liked that much.

My fav "horror" would be Dusk maiden of amnesia.

From these options, Shinsekai Yori is the best. Shiki and Elfen Lied are good too, but not as good as Shinsekai Yori.

Shiki is what I would go with since it is more centered on supernatural horror elements, and for Elfen Lied, it’s focused much more on bodily horror and sort of like science fiction.

However, beware with Elfen Lied. The manga is much more plot and lore heavy as the anime tends to leave out A LOT of things, but Shiki is pretty solid.

Mierko-chan was a horror anime that aired a little while back. I'd recommend it cause I enjoyed it. not scary but creepy and unnerving

some of these aren't even real horror, i'd recommend not wasting too much time with anime that are stand-alone horror rather then it being a subgenre of something because those that exist that aren't as obviously popular as AOT for example are just average okay shows but nothing special whatsoever.

I would second Devilman crybaby. Also maybe Parasyte the Maxim. Dorohedoro is pretty good. Perfect Blue is great, though it's more of a thriller. Most horror in anime is more on the thriller end of things. I saw someone recommend Mieruko chan- it's comedy horror. Yeah, there are ghouly things, but it's mostly comedy.

Calling EL horror is a stretch, and I say that as a fan. I would put it more in the realm of an R-rated action/thriller.

Shiki is much more classically horror. It’s a small and isolated rural town with scary vampires.

That said, I’m watching this thread, because I have historically found horror anime hard to find, and people seem desperate to pad their lists by including anything that they can remotely construe as such.

I’ll go ahead and at least mention something nobody else here has: Higurashi. I’d suggest it has a number of commonalities with Another. Both could easily be called folk horror, and prominently feature themes of paranoia and friendship. Both involve supernatural elements, and both are also at times very gory and brutal. I don’t know if I feel confident enough to recommend it, but some parallels between it and Another (a personal favorite) stuck out to me.
