Why does the cgi turn people off so much that they won't give this new adaptation a shot or even go as far as slandering it? Seems exaggerated and childish to me.

Studio Orange is the best CGI studio in Japan and this adaptation won't turn out like berserk or ex-arm.

To put it bluntly, the trailer is visually egregious, and first impressions count; sorry for not wanting to brown-nose Orange.

Regarding reactions and backlash to the new trailers, I believe that people have every right to be up in arms over a series getting a new installment after nearly 25 years, only for it to be subject to radical redesign that in no way reflects nor maintains original stylistic elements that its viewers grew to appreciate. CG animation is and will continue to be subjective and controversial, but regardless of your stance, you have to at least recognize that there is a stark contrast between the two in terms of animation, arguably one of the main components of an anime to begin with.

To be cognizant of this massive change yet still label warranted backlash as childish does nothing but further display your own naivety. Attempt to empathize and perhaps play the devil's advocate to your own opinions before creating blatantly-opinionated topics that shame people for not seeing the world exactly through your own lens.

Doesn't bother me as much when the CGI is kept lowkey and simple. I really liked Houseki No Kuni. But Berserk was eye cancer.

How do you know it wont turn out like in those two Series you just mentioned o.O
It's not like everything Studio Orange ever did is amazing, even when looking at just the CGI thing. Beastars looked good. Yes. But that doesn't mean it's gonna look great for this one aswell.

It's possible that the CGI is gonna look clunky and off. Like it does in so many Shows. If we were to know it's gonna be made exactly like the original was, which most people loved, we'd be happier. If anything else we KNOW already it's not gonna look like the Anime we remember so fondly. So people not beeing thrilled about this makes total sense, to me.

This is the most important project of Studio Orange. And they have also confirmed they will be pouring everything they have in it, they have their best staff working on it. Beastars and Houseki no Kuni looked amazing. And every new project of Orange does as well.
Besides the Madhouse adaptation is incomplete and mostly anime original. Sure the art was great for the time, but being 2D doesn't automatically make the animation good. Cgi is easier to produce, adn with the right schedule and staff, it can look way better than anything Orange or any other japanese studio has done before, 3D animation wise.

You have got to check yourself there. The art wasn't "good for the time", it's just good art. it's like saying that Michelangelo was good for his time but Salvador Dali is better just because his work is newer.

Just pointing it out because it's a weird take that I see a lot, where people state that older anime looks bad, old, or "good for it's time", even though it's just drawn in a different style and has a different approach to colour use.

Just my opinion, but the track record for most CG anime makes a lot of people skeptical as to how this will turn out. I love Beastars and it has wonderful animation, and land of the lustrous is one of the best CG anime I have ever seen, but most CG anime don’t turn out that well. I definitely think people have the right to skip a series because of the CG, but also they can’t talk crap about the series without giving it a shot.

To be honest, in Berserk the sound effects bothered me more than the CGI.
That said i am not exactly a fan of it. Especially not when they get their hands on a classic.
Sidonia was another matter as it was something entirely new for me.
But the characters animation were terrible in that one too, the battles and mechs kinda made up for it though.
Will probably watch it anyway, worst case scenario it will just leave a bad taste in my mouth, like Berserk did.

Because a lot of people think that CGI anime looks ugly, even when done well. Personally, I don't think the overall anime aesthetic, which is heavily rooted in 2D style, translates well to a more 3D CGI style, no matter how well the CGI is done. I can't think of a single CGI adaptation that I don't think would look better if it were more traditionally animated, but plenty that look worse. Look at Blame!, for instance - the manga is beautiful and highly detailed, which is lost in the anime adaptation.

In this particular case, I think people just wanted a full adaptation of the Trigun manga in a cleaner visual style, akin to Badlands Rumble. Basically, Trigun: "Brotherhood." Instead we get this? In 10 years, it's going to look more dated than the original 90s adaptation.

I will admit this one looks better than most HOWEVER

I don’t like that it’s choppy. The motions just look weird and not natural. If you compare to say, Arcane - it’s all CGI/3D but it’s truly a gorgeous masterpiece. Movements are natural and the art style is incredibly unique.

Secondly, it feels like medium is taking over the traditional art style of anime. While I understand CGI is cheaper, I just don’t like it as much. Personal preference. I don’t think it’ll ever have the same charm as 2D animation. So it kinda worries me that once day 2D animation won’t exist. Look at Disney. I miss the old style as beautiful as the new movies are. Just not the same.

CGI anime is an acquired taste. I personally prefer traditional animation a lot more. There is no rational reason for it, CGI just looks ugly to me. Even Studio Orange stuff looks very "off" to me.

Only exception is Arcane made by Fortiche Production. That one was really beautiful and I couldn't imagine this show in 2D.

At the same time this argument doesn't matter. Not every anime is made for everyone. There is enough "traditional" anime for a lifetime.

I thought the reason why I'd prefer even oldschool 2d animation vs modern CGI when it comes to characters in particular (for mechs, effects, ships, even some monsters, I'm all fine with CGI), and a main reason has to do with PRECISIVENESS. So, something like this obvious looks good & even older ones look good even with dated animation as it's still precise but retains the retro charm of the era:

But CGI could match it too in that case. However, when it comes to animating characters, that's where the awkwardness comes in CGI . For our case with Trigun now, it looks good for CGI, but ... floaty & while it has some good expressiveness, for CGI, it still doesn't match up to something that came a bit over two decades ago. So it's like, can praise it for being good CGI, better than other CGI, just how like someone could praise dubs for being good dubs, better than other dubs, but it ultimately inferior the OG.

pretty much all of this. cgi can be good
but ultimately is inferior to hand drawn animation. cgi is cheaper, which honestly regardless of how good it is kind of says it all. The original show while not a complete retelling of the manga at least matched the style, which is something else this fails on. Im going to give the show a chance but the only reason for that is out of respect for the original manga and anime.

Art is subjective, and people don't always know why they do or don't like the way something looks. Sometimes there isn't a reason, or sometimes something may just seem 'off' or unnatural to them. For some the animation is an important feature to them and can make or break an anime. I agree that sometimes even if you don't like the animation but give it a chance, a good story and well done characters can keep you interested.

hbvnfj you joined MAL in 2021, welcome. As for why does the cgi turn people off so much. Because unless it's for a Movie, in the eyes of many, it's still to early for CGI to appear as often as it is in anime.

I actively hate it when people call cel animation "dated" or something equivalent. It's like calling clay animation dated, or practical effects dated as opposed to CG. The limitations to an animation style/budget can't be all chalked up to age. People are so obsessed with technology that anything that isn't on a computer is seen as inferior, yet practical effects are always deemed as amazing and its encouraged that they are used frequently. Nothing wrong with digital but it shouldn't replace real paint, and can't.

I don't care about 3D anime, I welcome them. I think more people are subconsciously upset about the further burial of traditional/cel animation. It's a sad and unnecessary death. Good things take a little extra time and money, but quality seems irrelevant these days (not that digital/3D is inherently worse).

Dunno about others, but for me - because it feels more dead, unnatural. Hand-drawn animation feels more alive and more charming for me.

I don't mind CG in "Appleseed", in "Trigun Stampede" too, but still would prefer hand-drawn.

I think one of the problems is that people don’t like change but me personally, I think 3DCG is a great animation tool if it’s done right.

Teigin Stampede does 3DCG Justice. The animation and visuals are gorgeous!

I see alot of people using this "People don't hate CGI, but hate bad CGI"...Like, how can we determine what is objectively "Bad CGI" in this day and age? This is not like in the early 90's where the CGI actually looked pretty cartoony and fake...Since then CGI has become too realistic that most of the time complaining about it has become pointless in my opinion.

I find it more baffling when people whine about CGI used along 2D animation...It's like we can't have best of both worlds...if CGI is used then it's just "bad".
