Then there's Papa no Iukoto wo Kikinasai! and Aishiteruze Baby★★, two shows I know nothing about beyond the synopses. |

| I"d give https://myanimelist.net/anime/36028/Golden_Kamuy a try. They're not father and daughter, but they have a strong bond, as is apparent in season three. Sugimoto is a veteran of the just-ended Russo-Japanese War (1904-05). He teams up with fourteen year-old Ainu girl Asirpa on a hunt to find a cache of gold and maybe Asirpa's father. This show has a serious story leavened by some really humorous scenes like this. I love how they illustrate Asirpa's inebriation by having her body sway back and forth in front of the camera. The man they mention, Hijikata Toshizou, was a leader of the Shinsengumi, a regiment of thugs recruited to protect the Emperor. As the anime says, Hijikata officially died at the Battle of Hakodate in 1867, but in Golden Kamuy he has mysteriously survived some forty years to become an important character. For a modern story I'll suggest https://myanimelist.net/anime/10162/Usagi_Drop. 30-yo Daikichi goes home for his grandfather's funeral and encounters five-year-old Rin who turns out to be grandpa's illegitimate daughter. When the rest of his family seem ready to abandon her to an orphanage, Dakichi steps up and offers to take her in. I'll also recommend the excellent https://myanimelist.net/anime/1827/Seirei_no_Moribito which has the opposite, non-blood related pairing of young Prince Chagum and a female bodyguard named Balsa. |
