I'm 9 episodes and haven't a clue. Would appreciate why you think it may be the case. Thanks!

From the way that she trys to avert her eyes from the paint in the beginning of the OP, I think the paint represents her encounters with ghosts, her running through paint may represent her trying to rush past all her daily paranormal encounters.

I think it's meant to symbolise blood, but they didn't actually show blood splattered all over everything because they probably wanted to avoid the more intrusive forms of censorship it would spawn.

Because world around her is seemingly bright and colorful for those who cannot see the spirits.
Same goes for happy go lucky music, which is contrasted by unnerving lyrics and Miko herself being in distress.
It is a perfect allegory for Miko being forced to maintain this facade of normalcy.

Because she goes hard in the paint
Some things can only be achieved through animation.

That's actually a very interesting take on it. Thank you!

Hmm I don’t think too much about it. Interesting observation. Reading through all the comments people think it’s blood and I never thought of it that way. But the opening is amazing.

Pretty sure it's just a resemblance for "ectoplasm". You know, the substance that represents the manifestation of spirits.

I think that part of the song has any context.

Just an opening. Not a reference to anything.

Maybe, just an artistic choice for the opening since Passione just loves to put MC running in the opening.
"Nobody fears death itself, but the life that leads to it. If you could die without suffering, no one would fear death, would you?".

When are we gonna talk about the dichotomy of the lyrics and the visuals though?

the colorful puddles are actually the censored "bodily juices" of the ghosts : their blood , saliva , sweat , fat , piss , $emen , ... lol .

the anime studio couldnt show young girls who were being covered with $emens , so they censored it , lol .

at 1st , these colorful puddles made me think that this is an anime about arts , just like the anime "blue period" this season , lol .
