| That's just whataboutism, OP. Even if those other characters were also hated, it wouldn't make Mineta look any better. Not like Mineta even deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as someone like Jiraiya. Seems like you don't understand why people like those other characters if you think their comparable to, by far, the worst character in MHA. He's personality is terrible, he's design uninspired, his quirk uninteresting... he simply has no redeeming qualities. Imagine Zenitsu without his thunderclap and flash. |

| Hisoka does not belong in this group of comparison. He's a pervert but he has not molested anybody nor peeked at anybody undressing. A better comparison would be Master Roshi from Dragon Ball or Sanji from One Piece. It's well known that Meliodas is a controversial character. He's often disliked for his constant molesting of Elizabeth. It's just that the people that follow that series either don't mind it or find it humorous. He is the main character. You either learn to tolerate it or you drop the series, and those who don't dropped it early on. Myself included. Fuck Meliodas. Jiraiya has not aged well but a lot of his antics were censored in the TV broadcast of Naruto that a lot of Western fans likely grew up watching. Besides, we were kids at the time, I doubt most people could remember him being much of a pervert even if it wasn't censored. His perversion was toned down a lot following the time skip. As for Mineta, not only does MHA have a substantially large female following but it's also popular with a lot of Gen Z kids who grew up in a different time compared to the early 2000s Naruto. A time of the #MeToo movement and internet feminism. Not to mention there's just been a lot of progress since Naruto in how women are viewed. The problem with Mineta though is that he's one-dimensional. While Jiraiya and Meliodas are perverts, that's not the only characteristic they have. They have strong personalities and plot involvement which is something Mineta does not have. He's only used for comedic relief, which is that he's a pervert. And I'm of the opinion that being a pervert isn't funny. Still, the biggest bane to Mineta I'd argue is that he's not a bishounen. People are quick to forgive shitty characters if they are attractive. Take Bakugo for instance. Bakugo has done something far more offensive than Mineta has and he's still the fangirls' sweet darling. He told a child he had bullied all his life to commit suicide because he was born handicapped and the cruelty of that is far too understated. |
