I might be the only one who does not understand but I think it's weird that chinese animations are on MAL but Avatar is not. Because chinese animation also doesn't have the "official" requirements to be an anime right? Or am I missing something here, not trying to get Avatar on MAL or anything just confused.

I also disagree with it but I'm too lazy to start a protest so I just complain about it on every thread I can find.

godzilla had a fucking stroke trying to read this

but to the oc, dongua is close enough to anime, its only that they speak mandarin (chinese). it isn't anime, but why not. it appeals to the same group

p.s. avatar is a cartoon based around asian art, so not an anime imo

I think it's because Japan and China are both Asian countries.

Who cares really? I think it's fine to add series if they come from surrounding areas like SK, China, and other SE Asian countries. They're more similar to anime than what cartoons are, plus we've gotten some great series out of other Asian countries (Scissor Seven, MDZS, The King's Avatar, etc.)

Just because a cartoon resembles an anime, doesn't mean that it is technically classified as one.

I find it quite interesting how in any such threads ATLA is always brought up. Apparently, they're only realizing now that its art-style is similar to anime, and for that one reason, it's a must to be added here. Since nothing else gets mentioned, it just seems like an excuse to just add ATLA.
I get what you mean, all though I am not saying they should add ATLA, I just thought it was weird that it's not on MAL while other non-anime series are on it.

I agree mostly, I do think it's weird to add shows from other Asian countries though

From what I know, almost every animation produced in Japan, South Korea or China is considered an anime on MAL. I mean, Pingu is on MAL...

What about stuff like Manhwa as well? There are probably thousands of them released, it'd be such a hassle if we couldn't track them as well, especially for Webtoon fans or normal manga readers.

"chinese anime" is actually called donghua!

but i'm guessing it's because avatar wasn't created in east asia?

This thread happens twice per week. Short version is
-if western style cartoons are ere included, it would be very debatable what “anime” would include and that line between what is and isn’t would become very hard to distinguish
-we’d be arguing until they included absolutely everything and people would have stuff like spongebob on their list (after all, avatar and rwby look more like anime stylistically than something like beastars, but if we include beastars, what else are we going to be flexible about regarding style)
-they decided to draw the line at “east Asia”
-I agree Anime produced in Taiwan, Korea, China etc probably shouldn’t be considered anime

I agree with you,
But not all are 3d, some are indeed 2d, for eg, there was an chinese anime that used to air in tv years ago, that anime was aimed for kids, and it was 2d.
The anime name: magic eye,the wonder boy.

Not all Donghua end up on MAL, it's only a select few and I'm sure myself. Must be something in the background I don't know about.

MAL can be pretty picky, Pacific Rim Code Black was animated by Polygon Pictures, but it's not on MAL. Avatar was animated in Korea, but it's not on MAL.

I guess it's cause they were written in the U.S., but Cannon Busters was written in the U.S., so MAL is just inconsistent with its rules

If you're talking about Avatar: The Last Airbender this is an animation produced by Nickelodeon, an american company. It's not an "anime", it's not even asian. It's like Wakfu, it's a French production that looks very close to anime but it is not. I don't know what's MAL policy on animated projects. We do have a youtube series HoloLive simply based on the fact it's japanese but it's a completely new genre, while real animation work like RWBY fall under the radar because it's american. I'm just guessing there, but I believe they try to keep out non-asian genre out of here, while Japanese, Chinese or even Korean (e.g. (Elsword) animation is OK.

Yeah I know Avatar isn't an anime, but I just find it weird since there are other non-anime series on the site
