I noticed that in addition to anime and manga, MAL also includes aeni, manhwa, donghua and manhua in their database...it just makes me wonder, how come western anime (i.e. Dota: Dragon's Blood, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Teen Titans, Castlevania, etc.) aren't treated like their Japanese-influenced, Korean/Chinese counterparts? Is it because there's a lot of them?

It's because fans of manga tend to also be fans of manhua and manhwa and their animated counterparts needed to be added as well for database consistency. For those three countries it's an objective measure, if it's from one of those three (Japan, South Korea, China) it's anime, if it isn't then it's not. You don't have to deal with the subjective nature of how anime something is for Western stuff, Latino stuff, or Southeast Asian stuff.

Anime is anything animated that comes from Japan, simply. What's included and not included is mostly for convenience of the database staff, if you get into the technical aspects, a lot of things people consider cartoons would also be considered anime, as they were created by Japanese animation studios. They're excluded though, because then you'd have a bunch of soyboys complaining their favorite cartoon should be on here too. Don't really overthink it, what's included or not included, isn't always consistent.

I think only non-asian countries even make a cultural difference between the words anime and manga in the first place. If you look at popular asian trackers such as Douban (Chinese platform), they categorize all the shows you mention as Anime. They have seperate tags to indicate if it's American Animation, Japanese Animation, Chinese Animation (which they call « Domestic Animation »), etc.

Just see for yourself:
Avatar: The Last Airbender => https://movie.douban.com/subject/1938084/
Attack on Titan => https://movie.douban.com/subject/33440021/
The King's Avatar => https://movie.douban.com/subject/26859991/

Japanese Anime definition does not have Japan included:
https://jisho.org/word/%E3%82%A2%E3%83%8B%E3%83%A1

Chinese Anime definition does not have Japan included:
https://www.mdbg.net/chinese/dictionary?page=worddict&wdrst=0&wdqb=%E5%8A%A8%E6%BC%AB

English Anime definition has Japan included:
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/anime

It seems like some sort of elitism that was promoted by oversea fans and eventually got pushed as the definition of the word. That said, MAL is slowly adding Korean and Chinese animation despite this inconsistency. Now that MAL has been acquired by Media Do, a Japanese company, their definition of the word Anime is not necessarily the same as people around here. Other shows may or may not find their place over here in the future.

If you use a VPN and set yourself to Tokyo and go to Amazon Prime's videos for Japan, the first video is Curious George dubbed (in Japanese) next to seasonal anime. So you're right, there isn't a distinction whatsoever.

I would prefer if only series totally produced only in Japan were allowed.

Let's also not forget this: https://myanimelist.net/anime/1221/Demashita_Powerpuff_Girls_Z
It's made made in Japan but based on a foreign property. Again, japanese staff: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powerpuff_Girls_Z

I wouldn't want to touch a platform, or website that considers Teen Titans an anime
