Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (light novel)
| As many of you may know who are LN readers (I'm an anime only) what truly makes Re:Zero a master class in story telling are the subtle call-backs and references, hints, and etc to other moments in time. In essence, Re:Zero isn't a linear story, it's more or less a jigsaw puzzle. A more traditional way of story-telling is- Past Event(s) Explained -> Character Motives/Actions -> Character Progression/Development Re:Zero inverts this to build mystery and suspense. Character Motives/Actions -> Past Event(s) Explained -> Character Progression/Development That's because at it's core, Re:Zero is a narrative about starting over. No matter what you have been through, or how much time you have wasted, you can ALWAYS start over and begin again. In Season 1 Episode 23, after Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti is finally defeated, Emilia is crying and she does not know why.   credit to @ttcchen for picking up on this reference. ------- In Season 1 Episode 13, while Subaru is admonishing Julius in the middle of the Palace, he says to him--  As we know now, Subaru was projecting his feelings of inadequacy from his father onto Julius, who as a knight, are seen as higher class and status due to the name of their father.  credit to @rakp333 ----- More of a "darker" reference in terms of foreshadowing, but after the battle against the White Whale, the anime made sure to emphasize these words that Crusch said in particular by placing the focus on her face.  And as we know, she did forget. Credit to @rakp333 again. His entire post encourages anime only viewers to pay attention to Season 1 call backs and references. ----- Don't have the time to grab the screenshots right now, but in Season 1 Episode 17, after Otto pushed Subaru out of the carriage and towards the White Whale, it is implied that he told the dragon to go back to Subaru and pick him up again. Unfortunately, it is also implied that he ran into the Witch's Cult and was killed during that loop. So in essence, his blessing had already been foreshadowed. -------- Of course there are far more. | I'd like to point out in Episode 18, when Subaru freezed to death by Puck he hears someone is laughing, he mentions it is a voice of someone he hates(Petelgeuse) but realizes he is the one laughing, laughing at himself, he hates himself. This is also a foreshadowing to Petelgeuse's body swap ability. |
