As the anime industry grows, so will the amount of people and the type of people consuming it. Realistically anime is not going to be a thing that is consumed mainly by japan, and its likely that it will be a worldwide thing within the next decade or two, judging from the amount of sales in America. It isn’t a medium consumed solely by the Japanese. So with a bigger and more wide ranged audience you will expect more diversity. If the industry leaders decides that they don’t want to accept that, then it’s just going to hurt the industry as a whole. There are literally tons of black fans in the anime community today. If you were black would you really want your favorite characters to dehumanize you and make you feel like shit just for enjoying the same things that many white people and Asian people do?


I really don’t understand why this is an argument, why are you against positive representation? Are you scared of people being treated as people and not as stereotypes? Are you scared of black characters being written well instead of as a gag to make you laugh? Like wtf??


And btw, I was simply addressing the fact that someone said it was a silly complaint. I don’t think it is a silly complaint that thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of fans want to be somewhat represented in their favorite shows. I don’t think that Japanese people or the anime industry specifically are racist; Rather that they don’t understand many of the nuances of racial politics (being from a fairly isolated island country) and their limited perspectives and experiences with people of different races make them sometimes make decisions or do certain things that are offensive without them fully knowing the impact.)
